Amazingly, I said this earlier today. Everything in this country is celebrated and recognized from Gay Pride to the Holocaust, yet Black History is barely recognized. In this month of June I see lots of big companies changing their profile picture to reflect Gay Pride yet I haven’t seen any of them change their profile to honor Black History. I am so thankful for the opportunity to Homeschool so that I can teach and celebrate Black accomplishments with my children. In keeping with the wave of sharing $#!% that's on my mind I'm going to talk about diversity in the influencer market or a noticeable lack of it. Specifically I am referring to influencer events, who local businesses choose to work with, and opportunities for influencer collaborations. I'll start off with events. As of late I can't even count how many times we've been invited to an influencer event and we're the only people of color there. Or how many times I've seen promotions from events that only had a certain race of people on the guest list. I appreciate every collaboration we've had but walking into a room and seeing that we have the weight of representing a whole race of people for the sake of a brand wanted to seem diverse can get mentally exhausting. In 2019, with all of the amazing black, brown, and tan influencers out there, this just should not be so. Speaking of all the multi colored influencers, why do some businesses only work with the same type of influencers and create the same type of ads again and again? Are they not aware of any other look for who represents their brands? Real talk whenever I see a lack of color in ads, events, or whatever else I automatically think this is clearly for one type of person and that person does not look like me. Which I can admit for some things is fine. I have no problem with certain things being associated with a particular race or culture. However I think that's not the case when it comes to food, travel, fashion, art, etc. Diversity in representation matters. And that brings me to my last point. I wish there was also diversity in the brands we get to collaborate with. In all our five years of blogging we have been approached with the chance to collaborate with a black owned business twice. Meanwhile businesses owned by other ethnicities are consistently reaching out to us. As a black women raising a black child in America, I realize the power of what we do on social media; how we are changing what people think of the single black mother and the young black child. And it would be so incredible for us to be able to use our platform to feature a more diverse representation of local city life.
