After many months of treatment and tests, the doctors now think my labrum is torn. What the heck is a labrum, you ask? It is the cushioning inside our hip joint. I tore mine in 2016 and had surgery to repair it. The recovery was hell -over a month on crutches, so painful, took more than a year to get back to normal. Then I got pregnant with Lincoln which didn’t help hip matters. This past September, I slipped and fell while I was holding Lincoln. I felt like I re-tore because my hip hurt SO bad afterwards. I started physical therapy the next day and have spent the last 8 months in and out of various providers, trying to confirm a diagnosis. Re-tears don’t show up well on MRIs, and labral tears are difficult to diagnosis in general, so it’s tricky. Three years ago when this happened the first time, the only option I knew about was surgery. I needed surgery then because I also had bone impingement, which is what caused this to happen. Well now the is a new option called PRP. I’ll try to give you the short explanation - basically it’s a form of regenerative medicine. My blood will be drawn, then spun. The platelet rich plasma will be injected into my hip socket and surrounding ligaments. The PRP is full of growth factors that heal injuries. I’ll be asleep while this is done - phew! Afterwards the pain will increase for an unspecified amount of time (this is what is keeping me awake at night) and then my body will hopefully start to heal itself. Regenerative medicine is still a relatively new field. It’s still being researched but very slowly since most research institutions are run by surgeons. My doctor gives this a 50/50 shot at working. It would be higher if I hadn’t already had surgery. I’m taking those odds as I’m looking for any chance to avoid another surgery. PRP takes months to work since regenerating is a slow process. I may need multiple injections. It may not work at all, but I’m taking that chance. If my body can heal itself, that would be pretty amazing. My procedure is on Tuesday morning. Cactus aren’t the typical landscaping at fast food restaurants here in California. So I admire this Der Weinerschnitzel for planting this Ferocactus. There were a lot of other cactus, such as Treichocereus pachanoi and Opuntia but the manager said people broke them and cut them down.
