"Those inch in my biceps " - Anonymous... . Today's topic is "Detraining". This came across my mind as I thought about my upcoming work trip to . It will be ~50 degrees ️ and there's a chance I might detrain for a few weeks. . So when do we "actually" lose muscle mass? ️. . Beginners . Evidence suggest muscle atrophy starts between 2 or 3-6 weeks of detraining (Hortobágyi et al., 1993; Jespersen et al., 2011; McMahon et al., 2014; Dirks et al., 2016 & Ochi et al., 2018). . Trained lifters . According to Hwang et al (2017), we can retain strength and muscle mass during a 2 week detraining period. On one side, Fisher et al (2013) says brief ~3 weeks doesn’t cause SIGNIFICANT atrophy. On a positive note, the same study also suggest detraining for ~3 weeks can promote greater hypertrophy upon returning to training. Evidence shows it's easier to regain muscle due to myonuclei and neural adaptations. . Please take these studies with a pinch of salt. Every study has its pros/cons & genetics play a key role to each individual. . LunchTimeGym tips during detraining: . 1️⃣Although you are having a break from the gym, try not to take a break from general activity and movement . . 2️⃣Also don’t over stress during detraining periods. Know that during detraining, muscles look smaller due to less glycogen and water. The early period of detraining will be glycogen loss and NOT muscle mass loss! .
