my friend commissioned me to dye these boxy sweatshirts and I totally think they need to go into production for the fall collection.@yettarose on another note...dyed and tie dyed is coming back with a vengeance! What happened? Now people keep calling me a tie dyer.

Last spring when I began solar dyeing as a side project, the sun was always out and the sky clear. This year when I need to gather the flowers for the dye jars, I have to plan according to the weather forecast. For every day of sun, there are three of rain...while this brings me more in tune with the ebb and flow of the world around me, I find I'm anxiously trying to get out when the sun shines. This is the latest jar of lilacs with small skeins of wool, silk, and cotton and a couple of swatches of cotton fabric. These samples will be part of an exhibition titled 'Repository of Memory'. One of the ideas I’m exploring is how the area in which we live has a lasting impact on us. I wanted to use a visual representation to explore this idea and as I dye yarn in the studio on a regular basis, it occurred to me that I could use the actual plants that are growing on the land where we live to dye fibres creating a visual memory on the yarn… like fibres of our being changing with experience. I wanted to use a gentle, passive approach to the dyeing and that's why I'm working with solar dyeing. The first image is the four dye jars basking in the late evening sun (left to right lilac, apple blossoms, dandelion and dandelion with rusted elements), the second image is of the lilac jar and the third is a close up of the lilacs in the jar. The dandelion jars were started at the end of May and the apple blossoms this past Saturday. I always have so much fun with purple (red) onion skin dye! There’s something so magical about putting fabric into a red liquid and watching it turn green. ✨ Red onions are high in anthocyanins which are responsible for this beautiful green. The large piece of organic cotton muslin was the first piece I put into the dye. It was mordanted with aluminum acetate and is the most vibrant. It is a soon to become a swaddle that will be available in my Etsy shop. The small piece lying on top of the large piece is organic quilting cotton that was also mordanted with aluminum acetate. It went into the dye with the other small samples, after I took the muslin out. The larger piece on the right is organic quilting cotton that was mordanted with soy. The two smaller pieces are also organic quilting cotton that were dipped in vinegar and baking soda solutions to alter the pH after being removed from the dye. In the past, I’ve also gotten beautiful, deep golden colors from red onion skins. Have you ever dyed with purple onions? If so, what color did you get? I’d love to hear about it! I’m organizing my samples today and hoping to get them all put into my dye journal. I couldn’t help but stop to marvel over the fact that all of these colors were made by plants. Nature is so incredible
