I’m often asked what tips I have for someone who is new to natural dyeing. My best piece of advice is to experiment, play and have fun before trying to dye something that is important to you.✨ A few other important tips: • Don’t skip scouring and mordanting • Always start by heating dye baths at a low temperature • Make sure the fiber is damp when putting it into the dye • Always test the color before adding the fiber Even after years of dyeing, experimentation is still my favorite part. Last night, my son, my husband and I all worked together to make this bundle dye. I hadn’t dyed with many of the flowers that we used so it was a total experiment. Natural dyeing is always fun but even more so when you don’t have your heart set on an outcome. Are you someone who likes to play around and experiment or would you rather jump right into a project

You might have seen that I made fresh indigo dye using my homegrown Japanese indigo (Persicaria Tinctoria) plants in my stories last night. I had a lot of fun and learned a few things along the way. Fresh indigo dyeing (direct dyeing) is much different than traditional indigo dyeing (vat dyeing), primarily because fresh leaf dye doesn’t need to be reduced. You also use much less plant material when direct dyeing. When making traditional indigo, it takes an estimated 300 lbs of dried leaves to successfully compost and ferment. Whereas, for direct dyeing, you can use as little as a couple handfuls. I used the blender and ice method. Here are the steps: - Cut indigo stalks from the plant - Remove the leaves - Add the leaves and a couple cups of ice to the blender - Add water and let the ice melt a bit - Blend on low for a minute or so - Poor the liquid through a strainer to remove plant matterial - Add damp fiber to the liquid - Swoosh fiber around for a few minutes in the liquid - Remove fiber and watch it change from green to blue as it oxidizes It’s not necessary to use a mordant when dyeing with a reduced indigo vat and the same is true for direct dyeing. However, last night, I tested both mordanted and unmordanted fabric in the fresh leaf dye and found that the soy mordanted fabric took the color the best. I knew that protein fibers were known to take fresh indigo color much better so it wasn’t too surprising that a protein mordanted fiber would be the same. In this photo, the two samples to the far left are both unmordanted and were the first to go into the dye. I then added the soy mordanted organic cotton sample on the far right. The two middle pieces were the last to go in. They are both organic quilting cotton. The greener piece was mordanted with aluminum acetate and the other was mordanted with soy. This was such a fun experiment and I can’t wait to try again with more soy mordanted fabric. Please feel free to ask any questions below
