BREAKING: @DairyFarmersofCanada ads falsely claiming no growth hormones present in Canadian milk have been removed after complaints filed by advocates with the assistance of Animal Justice! (Swipe right to see the ad)
We were SHOCKED when we learned of a dairy industry transit ad campaign attempting to dupe Canadians into believing that Canadian milk is hormone-free, when it contains IGF-1, a naturally occurring growth hormone present in all cow’s milk, designed to rapidly grow a newborn calf into a thousand pound adult.
After it was brought to our attention by concerned citizens, we were quick to help the public file complaints to Ad Standards on the basis of false advertising.
We’re so pleased that the deceitful ad campaign was removed and that it would no longer mislead Canadians!
It’s clear that Big Dairy is feeling the heat from its loss of profits and failing reputation. Compassionate consumers are increasingly choosing plant-based milks, which are kinder to animals, healthier for our bodies, and better for the environment!

Let’s talk milk!! I’ve been meaning to make this post for a while.
The recent trade deals of USMCA and CPTPP of an extra 3.9% of market access have lead to an overall 18% of our Canadian market over the last few years. This means other countries like USA, Mexico and Europe to allow their milk & milk products into our county.
This is a HUGE problem. Let me explain why, and some differences between Canadian and USA milk.
CANADA : Canada has a system called supply management which we only produce what we need. No excess. It ensures fair stable price for milk for the farmer and consumer. We also have a strict animal welfare program that is mandatory for all producers in Canada called Pro-Action to ensure comfortable housing, proper treatment and respect for animals, milk and meat withdrawal times with antibiotic use, and no rBST growth hormone. We also have a lower somatic cell count (SCC). It’s a way we measure milk quality. A reduced count of SCC is associated with better quality milk. (I will explain SCC further in another post.)Therefore Canadian milk is better quality. It also has less carbon footprint from not importing from other countries.
USA : The states has no supply management system so they produce an extreme excess of milk. The state of Wisconsin alone produces more milk then all of Canada. This excess milk they ship over to Canada and other counties. The farmers do not get paid well an can barley stay afloat, receiving government subsidies to survive. The states have an optional animal welfare program. Certain states still allow rBST growth hormone. Some farming co- ops in the states do not. They have a higher somatic cell count as I explained above.
What can YOU do?
Support local farmers by buying Canadian milk! HOW do you do this?
Look for the blue cow symbol or Dairy Farmers of Canada logo. Look for products that say 100% Canadian. Read the labels! Some dairy products say made with domestic and imported ingredients- that’s not 100% Canadian. Trust in our milk quality and animal welfare program Pro-Action as milk quality and animal health and wellness are very important to us! Support local Canadian dairy farmers. #oldredbarnleduc
