There's no needto travel outside London to find exotic landscape as we gaze upon the surface of the ✨"New River"✨ in Canonbury, Islington. The "New River" is actually neither new nor a river. It is a 28 mile(45km)water supply aqueduct completed in 1613 to bring drinking water from Hertfordshire to North London. Starting near Hertford, the channel flows in a S⬇️by SW↙️direction through Broxbourne, Cheshunt, Enfield, Southgate, Hornsey, Finsbury Park, finishing at Stoke Newington. The original channel ended❌ at Sadler's Wells, 1.5 miles to the SW. Before 1600, London's water supply was limited to the Thames‍♀️, local streams,wells and springs. ⛲️ In 1600, Edmund Colthurst had an idea to bring water from the springs of Hertfordshire. King James I granted the go ahead. After money ran out for the project, King James agreed to provide half the cost on the condition he received half the profit. Over 200 labourers⛏ were paid the equivalent of 4p per day to cut out the channel. ✂️ The total cost of construction amounted to £18,500. In 1946, the "new river" was truncatedat Stoke Newington leaving behind a section called the "New River Walk", a surprisinglyscenic stretch set amid weeping willowsin a residential part of Islington, as pictured.
