I have posted a few times about how to set a gripper, which is easily the most important part of the gripper close, but I don't think I have shown the "thumb ratchet" before. I was filming some closes recently and captured the perfect illustration of this technique. . To explain: Once you have crushed a gripper down until it is almost closed, the spring tension is at it's highest, requiring more and more force to close. However, for most people with average or larger hands, this is also the point at which your thumb can reach your index finger. By hooking your thumb over your index finger and pulling on it, you can add a 5th digit to help ratchet the gripper closed. . Watch closely in the video as I close the gripper as far as I can with my fingers, then grab with my thumb and pull the gripper a little more closed, hold the gripper in the position it is at with just my fingers (because isometric and eccentric strength is greater than concentric, for you nerds) and reach out again with my thumb to ratchet it in until it is closed. . This is one of the big reasons that pinch (thumb) strength carries over to grippers and everything else grip related. .
