I love this image from @tani_nette as it perfectly explains in pictures what the 4th Trimester concept is all about and why babies are often only happy in their parents' arms.
Babies thrive with soft touch and soft boundaries, the "right" scent, the "right" sounds, the "right" movements. This relaxes them, helps them to feel safe and secure.
Holding babies as much as they need to be held can be hard work and exhausting, especially in the early weeks where you are both recovering from pregnancy, labour, birth and now deep into new parenthood.
A soft, comfy, respectful sling that protects baby's airway and is kind to your body and comfy for you both can be a vitally useful tool. The type of sling doesn't matter: building that bond, caring for both halves of the dyad, and surviving matters.
It's our 4th Trimester meet in Sheffield this morning; one of my favourites!

Have you come across the concept of the “gently curved J shape” for baby positioning when being held? As opposed to a rigid J (as in it shows in typeface!) or a deeply curved C?
A gentle curve when baby’s chest is supported against the parent’s body respects the natural shape of a baby’s spine while they are small. It avoids them slumping into a ball with potential airway compromise (the C shape, where the head curls downwards), or flattening their back into a straight line (the typeface J shape). The curve at the bottom helps to create a more stable position with the “pelvic tuck” that’s good for hip development.
It’s also more comfy for everyone!
This is how we hold young babies naturally on our chests or shoulders.

Have you noticed that your baby will often only settle in your arms, as you rock them gently?
There is a very good reason for this: it is biological and entirely normal behaviour as a baby transitions from womb to world. The contrasts between life inside and in the world are huge and the reassurance of loving arms is vital.
Understanding the fourth trimester of a child’s life and how to be responsive is key to building a happy brain and a confident, securely attached child.
Don’t be afraid to hold and rock your baby. You belong together.

It has been a while since we had a good yawn picture!
Teething strikes, I think or a cold, or wind or... something’s not quite right anyway. Who knows?! My poor little Delilah, she is just not herself at the moment, she is so sad and drooly and has an awful cough.
There is going to lots of slingy cuddles in our house this week, even more than usual.

All of this sunshine is taking me back to the dizzy heatwave of 2018! I am hoping for more of the same this year. This is one of my favourite carrying pictures of all time, Delilah was only a couple of days old and it was the first time I’d managed to tandem carry them and the weather was just glorious.

“I want to carry her as much as I can before she doesn’t want to be held anymore. So if that means sacrificing my time alone to get ready because she needs me to carry her, then so be it. Your babies are only babies for a short amount of time - don’t forget that the next time you hear someone telling you “you shouldn’t carry your baby too much, you’re going to spoil her”. IDK about you guys but I love my ‘spoiled’ chi chi girl ✨✨” #bobax #honestmotherhood — @mother.jamfar
Did you know that wearing your baby upright can actually be a preventative measure against ear infections and can help ease the symptoms of GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease)?
GERD can be pretty prevalent in infants as sphincters tend to take a while to fully close. Carrying your baby in an upright position, tummy to tummy, prevents milk or gastric juices entering the immature middle ear and helps reduce the buildup of bacteria and infections Ah, the magic babywearing ✨
