This is kind of an embarrassing story to tell but I’m hoping you can learn from my mistakes! My little ones and I have been sick all week, so we have all been feeling a bit irritable and impatient. (I may or may not be trying to justify my behavior) This morning, when my 12 month-old was trying to crawl inside the house from the backyard, his older brother pushed him back out and then slammed the sliding door in his face. This was obviously very upsetting for baby J and he started wailing and trying to come in again. I told my 2.5 y/o, “It is not kind to push brother and lock him out, you need to let him in please.” My 2.5 y/o looked me straight in the eye and said, “no.” I asked him again, “Please open the door.” “No.” “You can open the door, or I can open it for you. Which would you like?” “No open the door!!” I opened the door for him and baby J started to crawl in. My 2.5 year old was understandably upset by my completely ignoring his request and took out his frustration on poor baby J. When he saw him crawling in, he shoved him back out and yelled at him “No J! Stay back outside!” Baby J resumed his wailing and I was frustrated by how seemingly heartless my eldest was behaving. Without thinking I yanked his arm harder than I meant to and spun him to face me. I got down to his level and told him, “I can’t let you push your brother. That is mean and J is crying. You need to let him inside. Do you understand?” The tears were welling in his eyes but he nodded and I let him go just as J had made it inside. As soon as my 2.5 y/o turned around he shoved his brother over. I snapped at him, “You need to go to your room!!” Which he refused and I repeated the same useless punishment. At the time I was even thinking, “since when do I tell him to go to his room? What am I doing‍♀️” But I was too frustrated to think of what to do. At this point, my 2.5 y/o was sobbing and J was watching the whole episode wide-eyed. I knew the baby was okay so I decided it was my 2.5 y/o who was telling me he needed something through his undesirable actions. I told him, “We need to take a break from J let’s go to your room.” Continued in comments

I love this quote from @milestonesmommyandme!⠀ ⠀ Most babies do not fall into a regular sleep pattern in the first few months of life, and many babies continue to need night parenting throughout the first year and beyond. Please please please tune out the noise that is telling you that this is somehow not okay. It’s normal! It’s freakin hard, but it’s normal! We do not have as much control over our babies as we like to think we do, and to believe that we can control these behaviors often leaves us feeling more anxious and stressed. Parenting does not end at night as convenient as it would be if that were the case. Our babies need us just as much at night as they need us during the day. ⠀ ⠀ : @milestonesmommyandme⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #realmotherhood #motherhood #momlife #maternalmentalhealth #newbaby #newmom #ittakesavillage #babybrain #takebackpostpartum #motherhoodunfiltered #nosleeptraining #attachment #newmama #firsttimemommy #responsiveparenting #babyledsleep #4thtrimester #tiredmama #tiredmom #cosleeping #breastfeedingmom

Responding, Instead of Reacting "The tendency to react, instead of respond, to emotionally charged situations, is not just a parenting challenge, it is a human challenge. We were made to react to threats. We perceive threats through our senses. Therefore, if we sense any emotion that we perceive as threatening, we tend to react, instead of respond." J. “How broken is a society where a mother is told she has anxiety because she doesn’t want to be away from her child for too long? Wanting to be close to your child is as natural and instinctual as it gets. It is not a medical condition; it’s called attachment and it’s incredibly healthy and fulfilling for both mother and child.” J. “When I thought I was not supposed to hold my child while they slept, I felt like the worst parent when I did, and constantly longed for them to transfer easily to their crib. Once I realized my child feels safest in my arms and that’s why they want to be there all the time, holding my children while they slept became a treasured moment. There is nothing sweeter and more gratifying than a snuggly baby sleeping in your arms. I had to let go of the fear and guilt, to experience the joy.” J. Love like the sun, not like a rainbow “Unconditional love is like the sun; dependable, constant, warm, radiant light. Conditional love is like a rainbow; a surprise, a rarity, something that happens after a storm but not always. You have to be in just the right spot, at just the right time, looking in just the right direction. No, I want my love to be like the sun; everywhere my children look, I want them to see me shining down on them, lighting their way. And when they close their eyes, I want them to feel the warmth of my love surrounding them. Rainbows are beautiful, but only the sun has the power to nurture and grow. Even the plants know, they need the consistent care only the sun can provide, not the fleeting beauty of the rainbow.” J.
