The majority of foals born annually to PMU mares are considered by-products and most are sent to feedlots to be fattened for slaughter. Jasmine was skin and bones when we rescued her after being severely neglected. Her transformation from sickness to health has been dramatic, as has been the case for so many of the horses rescued by Equine Advocates over the years. After over a year of “grinning and bearing it” I demolished my kitchen. I can’t tell you how cathartic it was. Or how it felt to carry out hundreds of pounds of constructed material that was not only ugly, but extremely nonfunctional (and depressing). . Something interesting happened after I finished. I looked around and noticed all of the small projects around the house that I had been putting off. . . By keeping this thing in my life for longer than I needed to, I let other things slide.
