A very good week of digging to satisfy our #jimmysmith #bluenote jones (for now). Our 3 favorites of his from the 4000 series: All #rvg #mono original pressings. Both Home Cookin’ (HSV0080) and The Sermon! have W. 63rd St. plates. We love Kenny Burrell’s playing on all 3 releases (please see previous post). Thank you, #chicago for being the most affordable vinyl addict’s paradise.

HSV0082: .................................................. The Rolling Stones - Aftermath London Records, 1966. First U.S. Stereo pressing. ................................................... While we’re colossal fans of the Mick Taylor-era (HSV0054) #therollingstones records (along with every other music fan with a brain), #aftermath is our favorite early offering from Keef and co. This is the straight #blues record the band had been waiting to lay down. There’s still tinges of #psychadelia (“My Sweet Lady Jane”) and #folk, as it WAS 1966, after all. While #paintitblack is the most well-known Stones tune on Aftermath, the real black cloud hangs over “Under My Thumb”, the marimba-accented song that they were playing during Meredith Hunter’s fatal stabbing at the hands of the #hellsangels at their infamous #altamont Speedway concert. Between “Thumb” and “Stupid Girl”, we hear #mickjagger in his usual playful, if not slightly vengeful, bait-and-switch routine with the ladies. “Flight 505” from side B would sound right at home on their early #1970s records. In fact, the tone and groove is strikingly similar to that of “Brown Sugar”, which we’d hear on Sticky Fingers six years later. That’s not to say this is a “transitional album” per se, but more of a coming out party. They were being themselves and you could hear it. As much as we love this LP, we’d still probably have to rank it 6th. That’s not because it doesn’t slap. It’s just...THAT’S how goddamn good The Rolling Stones are. But you knew that. Our copy is a US London first Stereo pressing. The UK version didn’t include “Paint It Black” but has four additional songs, two of which are quite good. @toothpick_nick what say you? Where does the US release of Aftermath rank in The Stones catalogue

HSV0091: .......................................... Jimmy Smith - A New Star-A New Sound Vol. 2 Blue Note, 1956. Mono. DG original 1st pressing. ............................................ A happy, humble greetings from Hyperspace!!! While we’re all about the music around here and seeing all of you great collectors’ posts, we are very honored to hit 1,000 followers!! We certainly don’t chase likes and followers, but we love being a part of the IG vinyl community. Our idea of what this blog would be has changed a lot. And we have you all to thank for that. So getting to that nice, round number feels more like acceptance and love than a dumb brag. We’ve learned such a great deal and met some amazing folks in the last 8 months. There are still a lot of jerks that use social media to tear people down and be mean. Boy, could the vinyl community be any DIFFERENT When we saw the 1k mark approaching, we knew we should post something special, but hadn’t gotten a handle on it yet. Until recently. We’re pretty dedicated diggers and record store nerds (we are lucky to live in #chicago) and don’t order many records online (also dangerous on the ol’ wallet). If you’ve been cruising with us a minute you know we’ve been going through a big time #jimmysmith #bluenote original pressing (is there any other kind?) phase. The Blue Note 4000 series, which extends from ‘57-‘72, are slightly easier to come by, with a few exceptions. The #1500 series are much rarer, for several reasons. They’re older and the series only contains 99 LP’s, to name a couple. They’re very hard to pick up on a budget. We recently struck up a convo with @strictlyheadies about our mutual love of #jazz and particularly Jimmy Smith. He remarked that he had a less-than-perfect copy of BN 1514 (if you follow him, you know he’s holding some serious ) but wasn’t sure how it would play. He was kind enough to clean it and sell it to us for a truly kind low price for a 64-year-old, highly collectible album. It sounds amazing. We’re very pleased to have this #mono original pressing with Lexington Ave. plates in our collection. See next post for the 1514 review.

HSV0092: ............................................. Sex Pistols - God Save The Queen 7” single. UK original first pressing. Virgin, 1977. .............................................. There’s a deleted scene in the special features menu from High Fidelity in which Rob Gordon gets a call from a rich lady in downtown Chicago who’s selling a vinyl collection. When he arrives at her chic Gold Coast condo, she (Beverly D’Angelo) leads him to an oak shelf to reveal a gigantic, pristine group of records, complete with a drawer of 7”. Rob, trying to hide his amazement as he flips through the singles collection, asks her price. “Give me fifty bucks and get them out of here”, she replies. The befuddled John Cusack informs her that it’s worth at least 100x that amount. She then informs him that it belongs to her cheating husband and she wants to see his face when she tells him she sold it for that paltry an amount. After sifting through the serious moral crisis he’s facing (one that could make him a pretty wealthy man), he declines. “Did you SEE the ‘God Save The Queen’ original pressing in there?”, she asks. “Yeah,” he answers. “I saw it.” He buys an ultra-rare Otis Redding single and leaves before he can change his mind. I didn’t start collecting records because of that movie, but I DO remember seeing that scene as a teenager and thinking “it’d be pretty cool to own that Sex Pistols single.” Well, this is that #sexpistols single. #godsavethequeen Last week I ducked into an antique store before my doctor’s appointment to see if there was any vinyl to be dug. I asked the shopkeeper if he kept any records around. He pulled three 7” singles out and put them on the counter. Two were nothing. One was this one. I inspected the jacket and disc. Both looked alarmingly pristine. As in straight-off-the-shelf pristine. As soon as I had the Discogs app open on my phone I was sweating. “Just checking my collection to make sure I don’t already have this one”, I fibbed. After confirming that it was an original UK first pressing, as it had “Did You No Wrong” on the b-side, I asked him his price. “I bought that the day it came out,” he said. “Five dollars.” Never stop digging.

HSV0088: ....................................... Emmylou Harris - Blue Kentucky Girl Warner Bros., 1979. ....................................... Emmylou Harris is one of the most prolific singer/songwriters in #countrymusic history. Her career, which spans almost a half-century, has been heaped with awards, including 14 #grammys (including the Lifetime Achievement last year), The Polar Music Prize and induction into the Country Music Hall Of Fame. She composed and recorded with the late #gramparsons on his debut album and posthumous Grievous Angel. Her first Grammy win came in #1980 for her superb LP, Blue Kentucky Girl. It features a collection of tunes from Willie Nelson, Rodney Crowell and the afore mentioned Parsons. “Even Cowgirls Get The Blues” features harmonies by Linda Rondstat and Dolly Parton. They’re taken from a discarded “trio” session the ladies recorded in haste, shelved for 10 years and would eventually finish. While #emmylouharris was already an accomplished songwriter, this collection of handpicked songs sound all her own. Anyone looking for a good starting point to get familiar would be wise to start with #bluekentuckygirl “Everytime You Leave” and “I Know An Ending When It Comes” are our personal favorites.

HSV0090: ............................................. The Cure - Boys Don’t Cry PVC, 1980. 1st pressing. ............................................. #boysdontcry is the first official North American release for #thecure It’s comprised of several songs from the band’s debut, Three Imaginary Boys, and a handful of new songs. It was an effort to raise the visibility of the band outside their native England. It was America’s first exposure to the gloom-poppers. The title track didn’t crack the U.S. charts, but found #robertsmith and co. a wider international following and a cult one in the U.S. that would explode into international superstardom in a matter of years. Opener “10:15 Saturday Night” is a stone cold classic. The early Cure stuff had a great shuffle to it. “Grinding Halt” is a searing surf rock number and “Subway Song” is downright creepy, ending with Smith shrieking unexpectedly into the microphone after a soft fade-out. It was a side we’d hear further on Pornography. “Three Imaginary Boys” is decades ahead of its time. It sounds like it could have appeared on The Bends thirteen years later. Smith’s guitar tone on his solo is tremendous. There’s really not a bad track to be found here.

HSV0089: .................................................. Zoot Sims - Choice United Artists, 1959. Japanese first mono pressing. .................................................. We know admittedly very little about #westcoast #jazz We’re trying to change that. We were first introduced to the playing of #zootsims from his highly sought-after #bluenote release with #juttahipp (an album whose fetching price most would rather spend on a down payment on a home). We spotted this beautiful copy of Choice by Sims @recklessrecords new Belmont location for a reasonable price and had to have it. Japanese vinyl is generally of high quality and the cover looked great. Side one is a series of cuts from a live date under Gerry Mulligan from 1954. Zoot’s playing is fantastic, but you can tell he’s playing with a band he’s unfamiliar with. Side 2 is far superior. It’s from leftover studio time Zoot had after recording an Annie Ross album in Hollywood in 1959. “You’re Driving Me Crazy” is tight, controlled but very light spirited. The piano playing of #russfreeman is a tutorial in restrained beauty. Simms takes the reigns after his solo and coasts the breezy tune to a waltzy finish. Side closer “Choice Blues” is another highlight. Freeman shines again with a great solo, weaving in front of and behind the beat. For relative newcomers to his playing, we enjoyed this Zoot set a lot, specifically side 2.
