CHILDREN AS OUR TEACHERS . My sons three years earth-side have taught me many things but perhaps the biggest lessons so far have been; TO LET GO, BE PRESENT & HAVE FUN. . Before becoming a Mum, I was afraid of losing control which resulted in fear and anxiety. My worry took me out of the present; always looking toward the future or dwelling in the past. . My own childhood forced me to grow up too fast. While this taught me many valuable lessons, it took away elements of spontaneity, fun and laughter. . When we find ourselves fighting our old habits and beliefs, or triggered by something or someone, it is an opportunity for growth. We are being called to listen, learn and heal. . Children can help to reactivate our sense of wonder and magic. . I am forever grateful my son chose me and opened my eyes and heart to a new world of possibilities. . What lessons are you learning from your child(ren)? . . . #childrenasteachers #lessonslearned #lettinggo #thementalhealthdoula #innerchildhealing #beherenow #counsellingpsychology #doulalife #fromtheinsideout #motheryourself #childrenaremagic #wonderandmagic #newpossibilities #childrenareourgreatestteachers #laughatyourself #justhavefun

I firmly believe that children are some of the best yoga teachers we have, if only we open our hearts to listen to them. This morning was tough for my household. My son left his homework at school, and was feeling anxious about telling his teacher today. On top of that, he has a wiggly tooth that he isn’t ready to pull. We talked about it, and had some frustrating moments with getting his teeth brushed properly before leaving the house. I kept thinking about that tooth, his unwillingness to let it go, and how that applies to SO much in our daily lives. You see, it isn’t his tooth that hurts. It is ready to fall out, holding on by a thread. It is his unwillingness to let go that hurts so much. We often cling to what is familiar, even if it hurts, even if it is exhausting to do so. It is so energy expensive to hold on to what is no longer serving us in our daily lives and in our yoga practices. As you step on to your mat today and every day, ask yourself where you can be softer, what you can let go of, and how that can help you expand. Thank you to all of the sweet little yogis in the world teaching us about patience, love, and letting go. Join us this week at The Retreat for a movement class. We are holding space for you to get curious, let go, and discover new things about yourself.

Going through my first cookbook, stunned by how precise and particular I was. “Don't agitate it too much at this point; the sea salt should just begin to dissolve, adding a slight brininess, but should still be in large, crunchy flakes.“ Um, what?!? Now I’m like, “I dunno, throw salt on top. You’re good.” This is what having children will do to you, and I definitely mean that as a good thing.

This is Hudson. Not buddy, not bud, not pal, not sweetheart, not sweetie, not pumpkin, not big kid, not sir. He’s also not shy about correcting you. If a stranger calls him young man, he will respond with, my name is Hudson. When I say “good morning sweetie” he responds with “you mean Hudson.” Quirky though it may seem, Hudson reminds me that identity is important. • Some mothers relish in being called “mom” by just about everyone after their baby is born. Some mothers like it for a while, and then it wears off. And some mothers feel as though this new name strips away part of their identity. This new motherhood role thing can feel like it eclipses the other aspects of ourselves. • If this resonates with you, I see you. I can tell you right now, it is in no way a reflection of you as a mother good or bad. It’s okay to be multifaceted, and it’s okay if you only want your baby to call you “mama”. And I encourage you to feel comfortable taking a page from Hudson’s book and don’t be afraid to respond with “My name is...”

Ok so I had two options with this post... share the first picture (because in all honesty it was the most comfortable I felt about all the pictures that followed) and write a meaningful quote about what I perceived this picture to represent ‍♀️. . OR . Step into being my fully expressed self right here, right now (because that’s my intention for 2019 - no holding back!). Does it look like I have this much cellulite in real life... NO... did these pictures make me question that and slip into the negative self talk and wounding of humiliation?...YES! I thought “how could I have walked on that beach confidently when I looked like that!?, what where people thinking of me?!” . I felt shame around these photos, more thoughts of “I eat well, I respect my body, I move my body, it shouldn’t look like that! I didn’t have that much cellulite before having a baby!” . I showed my photos to my loving partner and when I scooted passed the ones I was hating on I said, “don’t mind my cellulite” (like he was judging me for it). He said “that’s your problem not mine” and kept looking at all the photos. . And you know what he was right! That was my problem so I was going to work through these thoughts and give myself a whole bunch of love and not share any of this because these photos would be getting deleted. But I realised that if I deleted these and buried them so to speak, I was actually burying the shame I was experiencing for this incredible body I have been blessed with to walk me through this life. I was burying that shame in this beautiful body only to resurface again and again as I have continued to bury it throughout my life. . I spent many nights crying myself to sleep wishing I was skinny, many hours looking in the mirror, holding back the parts to make myself look smaller, saying things like “If I just lose this bit or tone this bit then I’ll be happy”. . I’ve had moments where I’ve felt confident in my body don’t get me wrong but it’s easy to love your body when it’s as close to your perceived ideas of societies expectations or men’s expectations. . Truly loving your body no matter what season of life your in, or how it looks... CONT. IN COMMENTS
