This grand old dame is 106 today. My Big Nana. Blowing her birthday party trumpet, she's not lost her sense of humour or fun. She's the fiercest lady I know. A World War II Croatian refugee, spending three years in an Egyptian refugee camp, with my Dida, Aunty Dina and my dear departed dad. She's got stories. Hardest worker I know, I have always thought of Big Nana when I'm pushing through my week. Grew up on the tiny island of Vis in the Adriatic Sea, she married a man who was a farmer. They farmed until the war, then fled from the bombing. She understands our farming life, adores Colin (he can do no wrong, urgh) and always pushes me to try again, work harder, keep going. My Nana. Or Big Nana, as my boys know her. 105 today! Still sharp as a tack, living with family, and head of the Ruljancich family. A refugee from Croatia, she fled war and lived in a Cairo Red Cross camp for three years with my Dida, Dad and Aunty before being accepted into Australia. Accepted in Australia. Like so many more should. By her hard work and love, she has seen her family become jewellers, farmers, surgeons, wine makers, architects, academics, parents and grandparents. I think a secret to her longevity could be her attitude.
