So many nonverbal kids out there with the capacity to communicate, but not the resources or access. Makes me so sad. Please parents and experts, presume competence and give all kids the opportunity to communicate. This is Emerson and some of her very first communication. The SLP would stop her swing and tell her to raise her hand if she wanted more swinging. This convinced me to pursue communication from an early age and make a commitment to giving her the resources and access. It’s required much patience, diligence, time, energy and resources to get her where she is today. We still have a long way to go. She’s a complex kid with very significant motor and visual issues. But she deserves a voice of her own. And I will never stop supporting her ability to express herself all day every day. At the point we are at now, access is everything. You will never see Emerson out and about without her communication device. She may go hours without using it, but when she has something to say, it is right there and ready for her. Gabe had his 2nd evaluation appt with the Augmentative Communication Specialist this morning. He focused on a program called Touch Chat and will try one more next week. The options are to stick with his current device Proloquo2go; Touch Chat; LAMP, and another one I can’t remember the name of. So far I like Touch Chat and Proloquo2go. She says he is very flexible and would do well with any of them, but needs to speak with the school’s communication specialist after our next meeting to get her opinion.
