⭐️ FINGER FOODS ⭐️ Whether you are doing traditional weaning with puréed foods or baby led weaning, soft finger foods should be introduced from 6 months. .
. Finger foods help babies to develop chewing and biting skills as well as developing their motor skills and coordination. .
. First finger foods should be around the same shape and size as an adult little finger. Large pieces work best at first while your baby is still learning to pick up foods. The food should stick out of the top of your baby’s fist. Pincer grip only develops at around 9-10 months so avoid small pieces of food at first. .
.
First finger foods should also be soft enough to ‘squish’ between your thumb and index finger (this is a good test to use to check the finger food for your baby). .
Some ideas of soft finger foods to try from 6 months:
Cooked broccoli
Cooked cauliflower
Cooked carrots (cut lengthways)
Cooked green beans or asparagus
Roasted sweet potato
Ripe peach
Ripe kiwi
Ripe mango
Ripe melon
Avocado
Bananas *Salmon fish cakes *Meatballs *Eggy bread *Omelette (cut into strips) *Mini bean or lentil burgers *Slow cooked beef or lamb *iron rich finger foods .
.

⭐️ Finger food ideas ⭐️ For this week’s #weaningwednesday, I am going to talk about suitable first finger foods for your baby. All of these examples are suitable from 6 months onwards. .
.
For the first/early finger foods (up until approx 9-10 months of age), it is important to offer BIG and SOFT pieces of food. As a guide, make sure the food is about the size of your finger and soft enough for you to “squish” between your fingers! .
.
The reason for the larger size in finger foods is that babies at this age are still developing their motor skills and can only grab foods using their fists (called the palmar grasp). They only develop the ‘pincer grasp’ later at about 9-10 months and it becomes more refined during 10-12 months, so smaller pieces of food can be offered. .
.
Some Examples: Banana
Steamed broccoli
Roasted sweet potato
Steamed asparagus (sorry no emoji!) .
.
Iron-rich examples: Lentil mini burger (from @myfussyeater recipe)
Omelette strip
Salmon fish cake (from @nutritionforbaby recipe)
Beef meatball
I also have some more iron-rich finger food examples in my previous #weaningwednesday post from last week. .

⭐️ INTRODUCING ALLERGENIC FOODS ⭐️ New weaning guidance for introducing ‘allergenic’ foods to babies was published in the UK in 2018, for the prevention of food allergies. .
.
What are allergenic foods?
Milk and dairy products Eggs Peanuts and tree nuts*
Fish
Shellfish
Wheat
Soy Sesame *as ground nuts or nut butters .
When thinking about food allergies and weaning, it is helpful to think in terms of babies who are at ‘higher risk’ of a food allergy and all other babies as two separate groups.
.
.
Your baby is considered at higher risk of food allergy if they have:
* Early onset eczema (before 6 months of age) particularly severe eczema * Another food allergy
.
.
Higher risk babies may benefit from earlier introduction of (cooked) egg and (ground) peanuts between 4 and 6 months of age, BUT this requires a discussion with a paediatrician (especially if your baby has severe eczema requiring daily steroid cream) who will advise you if you can introduce these foods at home or if your baby should be supervised in a hospital setting when these foods are introduced. See the BSACI guidance below for further information. .
.
For all other babies the advice is to introduce the allergenic foods from around 6 months of age, one at a time. There is insufficient evidence to suggest a particular order in which to introduce these foods, so do what works best for your family. .
.
You can introduce these foods after your baby has had ‘first tastes’ of foods such as vegetables. .
.
Once you have introduced the ‘allergenic’ foods, continue to give these in your child’s diet (if tolerated) so that their tolerance is maintained. .

"Food is fun until they're one" This is a phrase that really worries me...many of the mums I chat to think they don't need to think about what they feed their baby as milk stop provides everything.⠀
.⠀
Food should be fun but it SO much MORE than that. ⠀
.⠀
After 6 months babies need food to top up the critical nutrients that breastmilk or formula alone just cant provide.⠀
.⠀
Unfortunately I hear so many 'experts' giving the wrong message and advising parents not to worry about what their baby eats, as milk still provides everything your baby needs. ⠀
.⠀
Weaning needs careful planning. It's not just fruit and vegetables - you need to consider where your baby gets iron from, protein, essential fatty acids, vitamin A and D and many more nutrients.⠀
.⠀
I did a short survey and nearly 30% of all babies I saw last year had nutritional problems because mums followed the 'food is fun until they're one' mantra.⠀
.⠀
On the flip side the fun part, or letting them play with their food, really helps with their #sensoryweaning⠀
.⠀
You can read more in my blog on critical nutrients and sensory weaning or learn about nutrition for babies in my Baby Nutrition & Weaning digital course the links are in my bio⠀
