Being a dog mom has been such a great thing for me.  When I was fresh out of undergrad, Starsky helped me to learn and grow.  When I had my life upended my first year of law school, he was a huge comfort, giving me the unconditional love I needed.  After we were attacked this summer, Starsky wouldn’t leave my side for days. Having Quito join us has been so good us.  She has helped Starsky’s anxiety (he’s not made to be an only dog!) and she’s given me a project to work on.  Helping Quito overcome her anxieties and build her confidence has been a healing force for both Starsky and me. Confession:  I’ve been feeling a little self-conscious about this account lately.  It started out as just a dog account, written from Starsky’s perspective, and a way to share my sweet boy with the world.  It’s really morphed into something different in the last month or two and sometimes I’ve felt nervous about the changes because although it feels right to me, I know so many people follow just for the dogs.⠀ ⠀ But behind every dog account is a person running it – a person with a story, and with a reason WHY they created a dog account.  In the last few months, I’ve started sharing more about myself and about my relationship with my dogs.  Ultimately, Starsky’s story is not just about Starsky, and Kiki’s story is not just about Kiki.  His story and her story and my story are all intertwined in one giant web of life because we are a team.  Sharing about just Starsky or just Kiki isn’t a full picture of who these dogs are and it doesn’t feel genuine.⠀ ⠀ I know a lot of you follow for the doggy content.  As you’ve seen over the last few weeks, that certainly isn’t going anywhere!  But I hope you’ll also find some value in our discussions about mental health, hiking, and female empowerment. Because these dogs – and this dog mom – have a whole lot to say about that too.

Aren’t dogs the best caretakers?  We think we take care of them, but they truly are the ones who take care of us.⠀ ⠀ Sometimes I get insomnia.  It’s developed in the last year or two since my sleep schedule got really out of whack with law school and working late shifts.  My anxiety doesn’t help things, but it really is a problem when my PTSD is acting up.  Somehow, sweet Starsky always knows when I need a little extra love.  He curls up behind my knees or lays next to me so that we are touching.  Something about being near this boy allows the anxiety to roll right off of me, and I’m able to fall asleep so much faster.⠀ ⠀ I am so beyond lucky to have this guy in my life.  What’s one way your dog takes care of you?⠀ ⠀ #dogmomaf #dogmomlife #coonhoundsofinstagram #coonhoundsofnyc
