EATING DISORDERS ARE MORE THAN THEY SEEM ✨ For those of you out there who’ve never had an eating disorder, you might think that what we in the healthcare field often call “behaviors” are the majority of what an eating disorder is made up of. In fact, the DSM pretty much only covers specific behaviors in their conceptualization of eating disorders. ✨ But honestly, it’s a LOT more complicated than that. The behaviors are just what you see; the ways in which we act out our pain or our struggle. What’s really go on is so much more. It’s so much deeper. ✨ This is why I’m actually not a huge CBT for eating disorder treatment fan. In my very humble opinion and experience, CBT might help stop the behaviors... but usually, that just means they show up somewhere else, because the root of the problem is still there, looking for something to latch onto. ✨ If you’re seeking recovery, I urge you to dig deep. Help yourself gain the tools you need to redirect your behaviors towards something more sustainable, yes, but don’t forget the bottom of your iceberg. Don’t forget that under all of the behaviors is deep, deep pain. Victims of abuse are taught that what we endure is completely normal. When we have questions about how we’ve been treated everyone in a family cycle acts like this is completely normal. As a matter of fact, they blame you and make you the problem because you have failed to conform to them yet again.⁣ ⁣ In every situation even when you’re not directly involved, it’s your fault. I’ve been on a boundaries wave lately.⁣ ⁣ I know that others start to doubt their boundaries just because other people start to push back.⁣ ⁣ It’s just means that those are the people that really need your boundary because they have been crossing the line for awhile.⁣ ⁣ Also, be aware of when you are making allowances for others depending on whatever story they communicate to you. So many people who are empaths feel like they could make allowances because of the story.⁣ ⁣ While we can have empathy for others that doesn’t mean we shift and bend our own boundaries to help other people. It means we teach them through our own work how they can also benefit from setting their own.⁣ #boundaries

People can’t be pressured into changing no matter how far their lives stray. Just take into account people who are struggling with addiction. They know that the addiction is the issue but they don’t have the power to change unless they do it for themselves.⁣ ⁣ This is how I view codependency as well. So many people are stuck in the rescuer mode. We people please and rescue others constantly because we want to be helpful and feel fulfilled quickly. It’s a quick high for a codependent person.⁣ ⁣ We also give others the space to figure out their own stuff. We can’t change anyone at all. It’s more powerful to say, “I’ll be here when you need me. I’m not going to give you unwanted advice because you are in charge of your own life”⁣ ⁣ With that being said... I’ll be here for you when you need me. #traumaandabusecoach⁣

One of my first memes #waybackwednesday ⁣⁣ Yea I had no design experience whatsoever but I had a huge need to create a voice for myself.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ See some people don’t understand what it’s like to live decades under injustice. They don’t understand that your voice isn’t perfectly rehearsed when you start speaking out. The message sometimes comes out rough, sometimes full of tears and gasps, and sometimes you’re angry.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ In this meme, I pictured a flying monkey lecturing me about what I should do according to them. It was always a lecture about how I was wrong and how I needed to apologize for having a normal reaction to a lot of bullshit. This lecture came blanketed with “I’m neutral” but they weren’t.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ This neutral stance is inducing the guilt/ shame factor to keep a victim apologizing for displaying reactive abuse. The generational abusive cycle conditions the victim to think that everything is their fault always. Victims are the ones constantly apologizing for standing up for themselves.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ The longer you play under the abusive cycle, the harder it is to get out. #abusivecycle
