Today, I was given a fantastic opportunity by @cr_uk to talk to patients and cancer survivors at Barts Hospital in light of International Clinical Trials Day. . It was incredibly inspirational to meet so many courageous people who kept a very positive attitude despite battling life on an everyday basis. . As a PhD student, I spend a lot of my time researching the unknown, questioning my data and trying to understand what (on earth) is actually going on. My cells choose to behave differently every time () and I’m honestly not even sure what to expect anymore. Nonetheless, having deep, meaningful conversations with the community was so refreshing. If you’re based in the lab, I strongly urge you to get involved in such events, as it’s vital to be able to see the broader picture of your research, and really appreciate the importance of your work too! (It’s also great motivation if you’re feeling done with experiments). . Not all heroes wear capes. Taught Miss 3 about water pollution today and how it affects our eco system (sea animals for Miss 3) I tangled some rope around the octopus, turtle and one of the whales to show her how ghost nets, plastics and other items can be harmful to our beautiful sea animals. Explained how they wont be able to swim, eat, breathe etc. I then asked her how we can protect our ocean to which she replied “we can’t throw rubbish in the ocean and no plastic” If my 3 years old can understand how bad it is based on a simple play, I’m sure we adults know better. When I went back to my husband’s hometown in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, being shocked and disappointed is an understatement. Those stilt houses is completely surrounded by garbage. Many people ask me why both of my boys were born prematurely. Did the doctors tell me what was wrong with me? Most know I’ve been an athlete all my life. I ran track from the age of 5 through college at North Carolina Central University. I would have never thought this would be my story. I learned quickly that bringing life into this world is not easy and this week is #BlackMaternalHealthWeek and we are focusing on the mortality rates for black women when giving birth. I wrote @trust_your_strength Book to share our story to create awareness. Everything in your pregnancy journey can be going right until the moment things change & its no longer going right anymore. If the doctors are not listening and don’t take your concerns seriously then your life & your baby life is at risk and this needs to change!! Even @serenawilliams & @af85 among so many other athletic & healthy women had difficulty bringing life into this world. . Our journey wasn’t easy but we made it through.
