Head to inspirationfitnessstudio.com or click the link in my bio to sign up for tomorrow's class! 10:30 to noon in Golden #Repost @optimize.physiotherapy ・・・ The ‘Should your knees pass your toes in a squat?’ debate. ↘️ The short answer is YES, it is definitely okay if your knees pass you toes in a squat pattern or position. ➡️ The real question, however, is whether you have the pre-requisite hardware (joint mobility) and software (motor control) to allow for this to happen efficiently: 1️⃣ Do you have enough ANKLE dorsiflexion to allow for safe travel of your knees over your toes? ↪️ Having adequate ankle ROM is critical. If your ankles move well, it allows for more tibial clearance and freedom of motion. This allows the knee to travel well past the toes without getting negatively effected. ➡️ Without adequate ankle ROM, you will force a collapse through the ankle/foot/knee if you try to get the knees past the toes. This will send the knee ‘off track’ and it is no longer an ideal thing to repeat on a regular basis. 2️⃣ Do you have the motor control to keep your knee/ankle/foot in a relatively good position to allow for the knees to pass the toes? ↪️ This is called joint centration. To use your ankle ROM effectively, it needs to be in a decent position (not perfect, but decent). This is so the joint can actually articulate according to its design. ➡️ It’s the job of your motor control to prevent unwanted collapse and keep things ‘in their tracks’. It’s one thing to have enough ankle ROM, it’s another to be able to use it effectively during movement. So yes, it is okay if your knees pass your toes. But it’s all dependant on your joint mobility and control.
