A 29-year-old computer #scientist Dr. Katie Bouman has earned applause worldwide for helping develop the algorithm that created the first-ever image of a #blackhole using the Event Horizon Telescope, which incidentally made her the first person to see the image of a black hole. Katherine Louise Bouman (born 1989) is an American imaging scientist and Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the California Institute of Technology. She works on computational methods for imaging. She started making the #algorithm three years ago while she was a #graduate student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). There, she led the project, assisted by a team from MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and the MIT Haystack Observatory. "Watching in disbelief as the first image I ever made of a black hole was in the process of being reconstructed," she wrote in the caption to the Facebook post. The black hole image, captured by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) - a network of eight linked telescopes - was rendered by Dr Bouman's algorithm. YOLO (You Only Look Once ) is a SOTA, real-time object detection system. I guess everyone must have seen this image by now, one of the greatest breakthroughs for humanity- the first ever real image of a black hole . . It more than just a new finding because it restores faith in how we do science and why we choose to believe in it. . 100 years ago, mearly through mathematical formulas, Einstein proposed this extremely bizarre idea, unlike, any fiction one could imagine - BLACK HOLE, a place in space ☄️where all laws of physics break down and a point of no-return, where even light cannot escape. . . For someone living at that time, this proposal would have been absolutely bonkers. But that is why science is amazing, one can make rational hypothesis based on what we already know. . More importantly, Science is not just about making hypothesis, it’s also about testing it in a rational manner and being able to produce reproducible answers. And that’s exactly what happened. . Over the years many studies had added evidence to Einstein’s black hole proposal. . Finally, today, 100 years later, with over 200 scientists working on it from 40 different countries and spending close to 50 million dollars, we have finally captured the first ever real image of a black hole.
