These 5 put on quite the show when we were out for our walk at the beach tonight. They created such an adorable scene as they walked past countless people and dogs that we had people stopping cars to talk to us, people pointing and smiling warmly, and others standing with us asking questions about this amazing group of rescued dogs. We stopped, we chatted, and we gave out quite a few of Piglet’s business cards. Here’s a short clip of part of one of the friendly informative conversations we had while the girls sat on a rock in front of a gorgeous Long Island Sound backdrop. Piggy sat in front of them for safety reasons. Paradise is a strong word but this is one of the most beautiful days of the year and we are lucky to have been able to take advantage of our friendly town beach area. Piglet’s Mission includes advocating for pets as well as people with disabilities. So, following through on that piece, we would like to introduce all of Piglet’s friends to the first edition of Piglet’s Service Dog Sunday! A few months ago a friend of mine sent me a note telling me about an extraordinary woman she thought I would be interested in meeting. She had heard her speak on a panel addressing equal access in the work place. Haben Girma is a disability rights lawyer, author, and speaker. She advocates for equal opportunities for people with disabilities. Haben is deaf and blind. Haben’s seeing eye dog is Mylo. Mylo travels the world with Haben as her service dog and beautiful companion. When I asked Haben what we can do on Piglet’s page to contribute to helping people with disabilities, she suggested that we encourage Piggy’s friends to consider being puppy raisers for Seeing Eye, Fidelco, Guiding Eyes for the Blind, Canine Companions for Independence and other organizations that train service dogs. These organizations also welcome donations. We all know that service dogs offer support and independence to their human partners. They are an integral part of accessibility for those with disabilities. I hope ALL of Piglet’s friends will follow and learn more about @habengirma She has just published her first book which is called Haben, The DeafBlind Woman Who Conquered Harvard Law.
