Memorial Day, formally known as Decoration Day, was originally started by a group of African Americans. Yes, The History Channel and many other credible historians have confirmed that the popular holiday was, in fact, initially an event held by newly liberated Blacks in Charleston, South Carolina. It happened on May 1, 1865 right after the Civil War ended. Thousands of newly freed slaves and regiments of the U.S. Colored Troops gathered to march around a Confederate Army prison camp in honor of the unnamed fallen Union soldiers who fought for their freedom. Also in attendance were thousands of Black women and children who reportedly sang hymns and carried flowers, wreaths, and crosses. And then the holiday got whitewashed Historian and author, David W. Blight, said in his book Race and Reunion: The Civil War in American Memory that years later African Americans were suddenly erased from the story by white Democrats after regaining control of state politics at the end of Reconstruction. Yes, that's right. A day that originally celebrated Black liberation was now being utilized for white supremacy, and it apparently all started from an 1865 article that was published in the Charleston Daily Courier that tried to discredit the facts. After discovering that news article, many historians have agreed that after being freed, one of the first things this group of African Americans did was gather to pay tribute to those who died while fighting for freedom. Sadly, you usually don't hear that part of the story. According to LiberationSchool.org, "the spirit of the first Decoration Day - the struggle for Black liberation and the fight against racism - has unfortunately been whitewashed from the modern Memorial Day." #BlackHistory #BlackHistoryFacts #MemorialDay#DecorationDay

WE DID IT, THEY HID IT: HOW #MEMORIALDAY WAS STRIPPED OF ITS AFRICAN AMERICAN ROOTS 15 POSTED BY BLACKTHEN - FEBRUARY 6, 2019 - BLACKS IN THE MILITARY, WE DID IT AND THEY HID IT Written by: Ben Becker What we now know as Memorial Day began as “#DecorationDay” in the immediate aftermath of the U.S. Civil War. It was a tradition initiated by former slaves to celebrate emancipation and commemorate those who died for that cause. These days, Memorial Day is arranged as a day “without politics”—a general patriotic celebration of all soldiers and veterans, regardless of the nature of the wars in which they participated. This is the opposite of how the day emerged, with explicitly partisan motivations, to celebrate those who fought for justice and #liberation. The concept that the population must “remember the sacrifice” of U.S. service members, without a critical reflection on the wars themselves, did not emerge by accident. It came about in the #JimCrow period as the Northern and Southern ruling classes sought to reunite the country around apolitical mourning, which required erasing the “divisive” issues of slavery and Black citizenship. These issues had been at the heart of the struggles of the #CivilWar and #Reconstruction. To truly honor Memorial Day means putting the politics back in. It means reviving the visions of emancipation and liberation that animated the first Decoration Days. It means celebrating those who have fought for justice, while exposing the cruel manipulation of hundreds of thousands of U.S. service members who have been sent to fight and die in wars for conquest and empire.  As the U.S. Civil War came to a close in April 1865, Union troops entered the city of Charleston, S.C., where four years prior the war had begun. While white residents had largely fled the city, Black residents of Charleston remained to celebrate and welcome the troops, who included the TwentyFirst Colored Infantry. Their celebration on May 1, 1865, the first “Decoration Day,” later became Memorial Day.

Gloomy outside, should be cleaning, but instead I sat down to doodle Waking up on Memorial Day I am always filled with so many emotions. Thankfulness, sadness, joy, reverence...tomorrow may be inconsequential for a lot of people, but for some it’s a day that feels so heavy, so overwhelming. And to you, I say THANK YOU. Thank you for carrying on the memory of your loved one that made the ultimate sacrifice. It’s a burden you didn’t know you would bear until that one moment that changed everything. I am thankful for their bravery, and I am thankful for yours. Happy (early) Decoration Day

Throwback, “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” as declared by General John A. Logan, the leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans. The first observed Decoration Day originally honored only those lost while fighting in the Civil War. Until the United States found itself in another major conflict during WWI and Decoration Day evolved to commemorate American military personnel who died in all wars, now known as Memorial Day. #ThrowbackThursday #DecorationDay

Sunday May 26, preparations for Memorial Day. For many years I was a Cub Scout den leader, and I very much loved my time with the sweet boys in my den. We learned many things about our country but one of my favorites was Memorial Day. Memorial Day (or less commonly called Decoration Day) is a holiday in the USA for remembering and honoring people who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. We would spend the morning placing flags on all the graves of our brave heroes, and talk about why they made the ultimate sacrifice. While sobering for them, I could see that every year as they grew they understood it more and that marching in the parade was more than just a fun thing to do. I hope that as you make your way thru today, you might spare a quick thought to these giggling boys honoring our brave men and women, and say a quick prayer for them. Happy Sunday to you, dear dolls! . . . . #barbie #barbiedoll #barbiemattel #mattel #barbiecollector #barbietingz #barbiemadetomove #barbiefashionista #barbieboy #barbiephoto #barbiephoto #barbiephotography #barbiephotogallery #instabarbie #barbieofinstagram #barbiesofinstagram #instadoll #doll #dollstagram #dollstargram #dolls #dollcollector #dollphoto #dollphotography #dollphotogallery #memorialday #decorationday #teachyourkids #cubscouts #denleader
