❤FOR ALL THE UNDIAGNOSED ❤⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ my collab with @thisthingtheycallrecovery⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ I spent the first 21 years of my life undiagnosed. From the moment I sat on my mum’s lap as a child & my knee slid out, we knew there was something not quite right with my body. At first, it was my party trick. I remember being at my youth club, sitting in a circle proudly pulling my knee out, saying ‘LOOK WHAT I CAN DO!’ It didn’t last long. Pain spread through my body from when I was 9.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ But even with a childhood in & out of physio, one of the top knee docs in the country, being talked out of 2 knee surgeries & new issues popping up every year, no one put anything together. My body was just...weird? I had loose ligaments. I was double jointed. There was no other suggestion for why I was this way. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ At 21, I saw a new physiotherapist who had been on an EDS course. It was luck. That's it. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Getting diagnosed with EDS III by Professor Grahame was the most validating thing that has ever happened to me. A lot of people think they’ll be upset when they get a diagnosis, but for me, having a name to put to why I was hurting so much changed my life.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Across many chronic conditions, many of which are (unsurprisingly) invisible, still have little research, predominantly impact women & are often misunderstood and misrepresented in society, so many people suffer without a name to explain why. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ In many ways, I’m lucky. Not only because I have a diagnosis, but because we didn’t even know there was something to look for and fight for in the first place. Now people are able to find out more information online, but often face such hardships to be heard and legitimised by their doctors. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ But my EDS was just as real on the day of my diagnosis as it was for the 21 years before that. I know so many of you are fighting to get recognition or a name to put to why you’re feeling the way you do and often feel left out in this community. I want to say that I see you, and you are welcome here.⠀ ⠀⠀ This is why advocacy and sharing accurate information online is so important because it will help other people get the care they deserve and so desperately need.
