We only have 12 years. Everyone needs to do their part to fight climate change. We can fight climate change with diet change. Repost @smasherbrown We have 12 years to fight climate change. And we can’t do it unless we change our diets. On our @milliondollarvegan journey with @genesisforanimals we visited the site of the Malibu fires, talked climate with the science editor of The Guardian, talked policy with the mayor of Brooklyn and went to Oxford to discuss the role of animal agriculture in global warming. Genesis is 12, and she’s speaking for our planet every day. It’s time we all join the fight. #dietchangenotclimatechange @janeunchainednews @itzel.aguilar706 @lovely_.mayaa @bpericadams Cake by @waybeyondcake #generationjane

Pick up after yourself! The easiest and most efficient way to do this is to reduce your output of waste entirely. Through awareness and active self-discipline, living low/zero waste is completely manageable. It does takes time and sacrifices but we are all capable of adapting and reducing anthropogenic pollution. Unfortunately, stuff doesn’t just go away. Even when things are tossed in “waste” bins or recycling, there is no guarantee it will end up in a landfill (methane gases ah!) or get recycled. Single use items can be avoided by always keeping a reusable spoon, fork, bottle, napkin, produce bags, etc with you, food scraps can be composted and returned to nourishing soil, clothes can be purchased second hand, and we can all consume less of things we really don’t need and only add to the physical and mental clutter of our lives. It’s all possible! It’s not just about straws! Also!! Fish do have nervous systems and experience conscious pain, even if it is seen differently than mammals. Unfortunately, the chance of a fish’s survival after being hooked is incredibly low even if they are able to swim away on their own. Their death can be caused by several factors including bleeding out, damage to gills and gut, exhaustion causing muscle break down, and infections from their outer layer of protective slime being removed from handling. When a fish is held out of water for 30-60 seconds, it increases their rate of mortality by 6 times! An estimated 10 to 100 billion farmed fish are killed globally every year, and about another 1 to 3 trillion fish are caught from the wild. The number of fish killed each year far exceeds the number of people who have ever existed on Earth. Majority of the waste found in oceans is from discarded fishing gear. It’s time to expand our focus of banning straws to banning fishing!
