Every year, I fall back in love with my Andrew Jackson Mock Trial. It's messy and it takes a lot of work, but I still love every aspect. It's differentiated for students, and each student is given a role where they can succeed - if they dig in and do the work. Today was the last day. ...
The trial ended, and students had to deliver their closing statements, and then it was time for the jury to deliberate. Most of the students left the room, and went to the media center. Only the jury was left behind. This meant that I had a smaller group of students in class. As I tell the kids, I usually assign the jury to a small group of students that are less willing to participate with the full class. With a smaller group, my shyest students came alive. They asked great questions, had fantastic input, and they really broke down the evidence.
I used to only have my Andrew Jackson mock trial, however, now I have a template version also! You can adapt the template to put any person or event on trial. It takes some class time, but it is so much fun and it gets your students to think critically!

Words matter! Take into consideration you say and ask for things. Especially when speaking to children ☺️ take for example these ... ^^^ #Repost @spark_learning ・・・
Yes! Your Words Matter including
- “you need to focus” (ADHD) - “very lazy” ( for swimming) - “doesn’t try hard enough” (anxiety) - “not listening” (Auditory Processing) - “writes sloppy” - (Dysgraphia) - “she’s 10 and can’t spell?” (Dyslexia) - “not motivated”(teaching style?) Like all human beings, children want to do things they are “good at”. Let them SPARK in their own strengths and interests. Give them an opportunity.
Do you know your students?
Is there a particular interest they have? Can you reach them in a DIFFERENT WAY?
Do you know their favorite colors or extra curricular activities.
Try - What’s in a name? Great resource for getting to know students. Thanks @weareteachers

Why come up with a writing prompt that meets each individual book when students could write the prompt themselves?
