Today is PAYDAY!  This is a success story for every parent who has a child that doesn’t “fit in the box” or has a disability.  Hillary was diagnosed with dyslexia at a very early age.  It was heartbreaking when her test showed that she had 95% comprehension but her phonemic awareness was 6%. She was struggling with reading,  and unhappy in elementary school & feeling defeated as she tried to compensate for her weaknesses. While visiting Aushwitz, Poland I had this “personal revelation” that if we homeschooled her we could cater and carve her education to her personal learning skills and talent. We could incorporate travel into learning.  The pressure and criticism was intense at times but we didn’t look back and it was so worthwhile as we learned together and created opportunities all over the world.  It was a definitely a long road with many tears and a lot of trial and error! Now…. Hillary is a harpist, speaks Chinese, received an associates degree during her high school years. She is an avid reader and read [through audio books] many of the classics, studied British history in London with BYU, taught English in China, served an 18 month mission in Taiwan, interned in Washington DC at the National Archives, travelled to 35 countries and spent countless summers in third world countries volunteering. She earned tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships. Now she is a college graduate in history and international development from BYU.  Best of all she is just a confident, kind, beautiful person inside and out!  My message to every parent…..Don’t give up! Repeating****** I hope everyone’s having a good memorial weekend. Over the weekend this continued to come up for me so I thought I’d honor my experience and share it with you. . . The mistakes our parents and ancestors made are carried with us in our lives today (wether we can see it or not) their wounds are our wounds. Often times we spend our lives reliving our childhood pains and they become a theme in our lives that sometimes we can recognize but most times we cannot. . . For me, as a child, living in Cuba I was always very sick (in and out of hospitals). My mother (to the best of her abilities) was not capable of caring for me. My grandmother however, took on that role. She quit her job as an OBGYN and left all responsibilities to be my #1 caregiver. her love for me was unconditional and to me she was everything. When I turned 7 I moved to the US and subsequently my grandmother died. My life was crushed, unable to grief and understand as a 7 year old I felt alone. I felt abandoned in a country that was not my home and with a mother that I barely knew. For the rest of my life including my adult life I continued to seek the love my grandma gave me so unconditionally. How did I do that? The only way I knew how by playing victim (as the sick child I once was) of every single circumstance I was involved in. . . As an adult I catch myself falling into the same old childlike behaviors of playing the victim. I have to constantly choose to allow myself to feel the pain and begin to take responsibility for my wrong doings as well as my own healing. I honor my story by being vulnerable and sharing it. I honor my story by deprograming the ingrained patterns that were left from pain and fear. I invite you to honor your story too.

This is personal but the content is dear to my heart. Note to Indie.. Please don’t grow up, but if you must, remember to play and never stop dreaming, shoot for the stars, take risk and fail hard and often. I have these talks with Indie so often because a fact about him is that he’s dyslexic (it’s passed down from me), academics have been a serious challenge since day one, however his thought process is incredible, like no other, and it’s this difference in perspective that is his super power. The dyslexic brain struggles so much to conform to the standard learning patterns, and although it seems like a serious disadvantage right now it will be his advantage in this life. So like I said it’s ok to fail Indie, you know that by now, but alway keep moving forward and take even bigger risk. Did you know there are many famous people who are dyslexic, it’s an incredible list, if you don’t know look it up. Anyone you find inspiration from who is dyslexic?

I’ve held myself back a lot because of my handwriting. Making ‘Katauros’ zine last year was a huge push for me, I nearly gave up many times because of the frustration and anxiety over my writing. Mr reeves dyslexic His passion is acting, dyslexic folk are good at what they are passionate about, they excel in them areas, he became a superstar, dyslexic people are high feeling people, well that's my belief as I can see a pattern in the people who are dyslexic, his high empathy makes him put him self in the shoes of others, and so he supports in alot of areas... He is passionate about bikes so he builds them, created another business out what he loves... A really nice moment for me to stop and reflect on how far I’ve come with the work I’ve done on my dyslexia. 10 year old me was terrified. Adult me nailed it. Pretty happy about that and grateful that no one around me let the condition define me. My teachers pushed me hard, my parents pushed me hard, and it all paid off.
