I'm stepping out of my genre comfort zone (again) I was happily surprised with the HP series, so I released a blog post about other genres I'd like to read more of. First up? Memoir. I recently received The Lie by @wcdameron (a memoir? called The Lie? ) and there's *so much* going on in the summary!!! You can read the details in my blog post PLUS my favorite tips for getting started with a genre you typically don't read. What is your least-read genre? Is The Lie peaking your interest? You can find it plus other releases (with a variety of genres) at @amazonpublishing #AmazonPublishing #sponsored www.amazon.com/TheLie-25

Review: The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware [] The Turn of the Key starts with nanny Rowan Caine in prison, writing to a potential lawyer about her case. The crime? She murdered a child she was taking care of. The novel-length "letter" reveals what happened from the moment Rowan applied for the position to what actually caused the child's death. It's NOT a clear cut case Pros: This is a modern day Hill House story. There's definitely mystery and spook, but it's far more concrete and technical. Apps and smartphones are the driving evil force, but there's also creaks in the night and gardens with old eerie statues. There's a good mix that keeps the haunted house plot alive. It kept me entertained enough to want to JUST KNOW. But whew, the ending. I audibly gasped at the ending. It turned the entire thing a wild ride. Cons: Ware has a thing for holding the big reveal till the end like a giant plot twist bomb. It's shocking, yes, but ever heard of ex machina? I got taken out of the story a bit because I didn't "buy" the conclusion's explanations. Some characters were also too stereotype for my liking. Overall: If you're into a light beach thriller, this is perfect for you. It's essentially a modern day haunted house spook with a lot less spook and much more scandal. Does this sound like your kind of read or will you pass?

There was a bang of the front door. Wilson growled from under the kitchen table and we all turned our heads expectantly towards the hallway, waiting for the teenager to appear. There was a pause. No teenager. We don’t live in a castle, the hallway isn’t that long but even by teenage standards progress was very slow. Unable to wait any longer I called. ‘How did you get on’? A further pause. ‘A head appeared around the doorframe’. ‘ I failed’, he said. ‘By 1 point’. There was a collective groan. Wilson sighed and went back to sleep. ‘Do you know what you failed on’? asked the husband. ‘I wasn’t sure where the catalytic converter was placed’, the teenager said. ‘I’m sorry’,? I said, ‘I thought you were sitting your driving theory exam’? ‘I was’, he said. ‘It’s on the exhaust’, said the husband, looking pleased with himself. ‘Where what is’? asked my mother, raising her head from the driving theory revision book where she had been studying road signs for the last 10minutes. ‘A catalytic what’? ‘Oh and the other question I got wrong’, the teenager continued, ‘was how many breaks should you take on a long car journey? It was a multiple choice question, every 20minutes, every 2 hours or not at all’? ‘Well’, I said, ‘surly it depends on how many cups of coffee you’ve had before you set out doesn’t it’? The husband looked at me. ‘And also how long should you hold a cold compress on a burn?’ Said the teenager now looking very glum. ‘My physics a level was easier’, he said. ‘I’m sorry’, I said. ‘Call me stupid’ (there was a muttering of stupid around the table) but how does knowing about burns make you a safer driver’? ‘Well’, said my mother, holding up the traffic sign book. ‘There wasn’t a sign like this in my day’. We all peered at the red sign that read ‘dots’. ‘Slightly concerning’, said the husband, taking the book off her and turning it around. ‘You’ve got the book upside down. It reads ‘stop’. ‘Oh’, said my mum. Xx

I came to believe that one of the aspects that makes people fall in love with Provence is a sort of strange, lingering nostalgia that seems to permeate the very air you breathe. It bounces off the golden light that paints every wall a shade of ochre. I felt it hiss behind my neck as I nibbled a croissant, or as I smelled the air laden with the scent of lavender lifting from the nearby fields at 9PM. Strawberries here are the best I’ve ever tasted, I hear someone say. Yet, sometimes you just miss the Asian food, reply the expats. Missing. There’s something I’m missing, or - more accurately - I have nostalgia of. The city. A couple people. The noodle bowls from that tiny Chinese place squeezed somewhere within Elizabeth Street. The flavour of rhubarb and dill - impossibly far for the average Italian, yet so strangely familiar. Sometimes, I feel like I’m left alone dragging a damn bag that’s meant for two to carry, one for each handle. I like to think that that someone is the version of myself I’m most happy and comfortable with. When you feel like you’re growing fast personally and professionally, or getting to live your truths, catching up with yourself can seem like a downhill cart race with no brakes (has this ever happened to you?), which means the answer lies in slowing down, not in staggering onwards faster. I like to think of Nostalgia as the getting back to something that was yours right from the start - including your own self. You miss flights, trains, connections. ‘Miss’ feels like a hunt with no prey to catch. The difference between going missing and nostalgia is the word ‘home’. - Nos.tal.gia | a sentimental longing or wistful affection for a period or place with happy personal associations. From Greek ’nostos’ (return home safely) + ‘algos’ (pain).
