Animal treasure hunt with the girls. The main aim of this exercise was to test their instruction following skills. It also worked on animal recognition and naming as well as the sound the animals make. How cute are they! #teachingtoddlers #teachingtips #teachersofinstagram #welovetoteach #welovekids #letslearntogether #learningthroughplay #parentingtips #bestjobever #earlychildhoodeducation #earlyyears #earlychildhooddevelopment #earlychildhood #raisingtoddlers #twins

Our favorite thing to do these days. She could throw rocks in the water for hours! Unfortunately, we were having so much fun that I waited too long to go home. By the time I started packing up, we were both tired, wet and hungry. Almost immediately Liv started having a meltdown about sitting in the bike trailor- aaaand thennn the dog took off running and barking at some kids down the beach. I was ANNOYED. I didn't WANT to navigate her feelings, or find a way to work together. I wanted to sit her down, yell at the dog to come, and just get.home. . BUT. Intimidating our children with our words, tone of voice, body language, and/or threat of punishments sends them into alarm. Their underdeveloped brains are not yet capable of using the calm, logical pre-frontal cortex in times of stress. This needs time to develop and so as long as they feel threatened, attacked, or misunderstood, they are unable to do anything but fight, flight, or freeze. On the other hand, connecting with our children in times of conflict calms their nervous system. The more we respond this way, the more opportunity we give to our children to free themselves from their overloaded sensory input. Their reptile brain can rest and let the pre-frontal cortex (the logical thinking brain) take over. The more we CONNECT with our children in times of conflict, the more they are able to build neuron connections between the primary brain and the executive brain, allowing them to access their executive brain faster and easier each time. The less we connect, the harder it will EVER be for them to use logical thinking in times of conflict. Training the brain this way takes time, and practice. And if we're being honest, a lot of that practice needs to happen on OUR end, as we decondition ourselves away from our instinctive tendencies to discipline rather than connect. . PS- I choose connect It took longer, I got more hungry and more tired, but I left the lake feeling really proud of myself as we biked home.
