How pretty is that pink? I used five avocado pits to create such a beauty this time without the skins. I let them simmer for a half hour for five days in a row to dye with. I’m 100 % happy with my dyeing results. I’m still waiting for some photos to come through but here are a selection of the results of our Eco Dyeing workshop with Anne Thoday. As you can see, we were working with both paper and fabric and had a variety of vats on the go, including a large vat of cherry ballart which produced the rich golden yellows. During the making of my online eco print training I worked spontaneously, in response to whatever found foliage was available. Then I chose not to edit out the less attractive results for the camera as I wanted to show how every piece can be valued for its process, not just its resulting aesthetic. . I think we place too much importance on our own conditioned notions of attractiveness and can even bypass our own creativity by wanting to mimic others but the paradox is that when you allow all your results to be seen, they somehow sing together and inspire further development so you end up loving them even more! . This week I am prepping for my eco-printing on paper workshop, getting some paper and leaves ready and doing a few tests. This bundle contained a few discharge prints, created by dyeing paper with logwood and then putting on some leaves that have good discharge properties (here I used Japanese maple, rose and geranium), then covering with an iron blanket (paper soaked in iron mordant). I press the paper between tiles to hold it together and boil it in water so that the leaves can release their own dye and also discharge the logwood dye, leaving lighter prints than the background colour. I am very grateful to Irit Dulman @iritdulman who has extensively developed the discharge eco-printing technique on fabric and who shares a lot about this method on her blog.
