What a novel! East Lynne by Mrs Henry Wood is a new favourite for me! It's hard to describe the plot without spoilers so I will only say that it is packed with drama and very hard to put down. Mrs Henry Wood - or I should rather say Ellen Wood. I wonder if it bothered her at the time to be referred to by her husband's name. She was born in 1814 and married Henry Wood at the age of 22. They lived for about 20 years in the South of France and had five children. After their return to England, they settled in London and Ellen began to write. She published more than 30 novels but East Lynne was probably her most popular one. It is one of the three novels which started the genre of the Victorian sensation novels. I am hoping to find more of her novels as I am definitely keen on reading more and I would love a biography to learn more about her. But Ellen Wood's writing wasn't limited to only novels. I don't know too many details but in 1867 she actually bought a magazine. She wrote many of the contributions herself and stayed the editor until her death in 1887. What a fascinating woman! To be honest, I had never even heard about East Lynne by Mrs. Henry Wood until I read it with #victoriansensationbookclub . If you are one of those people that views older books as "stuffy" or boring, let this be the one that sets you straight! The title may be unassuming, but the story is packed full of DRAMA. I don't even know how to talk about the basic plot without giving spoilers away. Trust me that it is a totally crazy ride (who knew that those Victorians had it in them?). . . Only when I went to take a picture of this lovely older edition did I realize that I had the perfect teapot to match it. What a happy surprise! Have you read this novel? Although I get the majority of my reads from the library, I had to purchase this one because my library didn't even have a copy. It is certainly more obscure than some.

Como en otras obras del género, encontramos amores apasionados, celos, adulterio, asesinatos, falsos culpables, enfermedades, graves accidentes, identidades ocultas bajo disfraces, etc. La historia, ambientada en casas señoriales, despachos de abogados, casas de campo de la clase media inglesa y mucho té, aunque por momentos se hace disparatada e inverosímil, apenas deja respiro y sus casi setecientas páginas se hacen en absoluto pesadas. Al contrario, se leen tan fácil y rápidamente que no da tiempo a aburrirse. Quizás sobren las interpelaciones al lector adelantando futuros acontecimientos y juzgando el comportamiento de los protagonistas, y hay un exceso de moralina, pero me lo he pasado pipa. ⬇️

A sign of reading a good novel is when you have problems tearing yourself away from it! East Lynne by Ellen Wood is one of the novels which defined the Victorian Sensation Novel and was published in monthly installments between January 1860 and September 1861. I consider myself lucky that I don't have to wait for each installment but I can totally see why it was such a bestseller at the time and how eagerly each installment must have been awaited. My copy is a jubilee edition of an old Sydney department store which celebrated their own anniversary by producing a radio drama of East Lynne and this book with photographs of the artists. I don’t think the store exists anymore but what a great idea to celebrate! It's an abridged copy but don't worry, I have got a full one as well. And it has beautiful illustrations but I will keep that for a later post - when I have finished the book. I am unsuccessfully trying to pace myself as I am reading it this month with the fabulous #victoriansensationbookclub and I have a feeling I will finish it ahead of time.
