It’s hard to believe our planet has created all these exquisite places on its own. We are just lucky enough to explore and spend time in them! I keep thinking about the world we will leave to our kids, it reminds me to try and do my part to be the most eco friendly I can be. Recycle, driving less, choosing less plastic, shop locally, living in a more efficiently designed home. Even if we ALL just do a little better it can add up, so our little ones will have the beauty of this world too. Pc: @clare9876

{LONG HOUSE POST UPDATE} —-> swipe for charts. Growing up in cold climates you learn that adding more heat to the house when it’s bitter cold outside only does one of two things. A) Makes your wood pile disappear faster or B) Your utility bill sky rocket. Neither of which do much for cold feet. As kids, we learned you just put on another layer. Most older houses can’t maintain a 70 deg differential inside/out and no one even tries. Add in the fact that you’re acclimated to the cold weather and a sweater or flannel will keep your core plenty warm. Every heating system has a point where it’s no longer efficient. To see a 67 deg differential between the garage and outside is astounding given that we are only running a single heater (with more heat available but why?) and have some decent air leaks up near the north (cold side) gables where the walls and roof meet that never got sealed before winter. (More on that coming soon) What’s deceptive about this image is that this was the lowest temp of the day on the coldest day in two years. Wind chill was -30F. It’s 31 degrees colder than the average temp for this month. When the sun came out the temps shot back up and within a couple hours the heat had shut off. Sizing a heating / cooling system is a science. Too big is bad. Too small is bad. This experience will come in handy when it comes time to size our boiler and set up the radiant system. Seems obsurd this whole house can be heated with approx 8kw or 24000 btu. For those couple morning hours while the sun warms the concrete in the garage a sweater keeps you warm. Then it’s back to t shirts while it’s cold enough outside to freeze over the lake. Oh and check those humidity numbers. Stupid dry! What’s impossible to convey is how comfortable this house is at 60F deg. You can sit against the wall and eat an ice cream cone in the middle of winter. It’s that comfortable. #energyefficienthomes #energyefficientbuilding #leedhomes #homedesign #housedesign #homedesignideas #timberframe #timberframing

Weeks have gone into planning the next stages of the house build. We’ve given the advice many times and are taking it ourselves. More planning, build slower. We didn’t have many options up till now. Build fast and try to be ahead on planning. We “got away” with it but it’s ZERO FUN! Among the research is siding systems. This material is a three dimensional rainscreen system that allows for stack effect (heat induced convection) drying BEHIND your siding in all directions while not allowing entry for pests. With the SIPs much thought MUST be given to moisture in BOTH liquid and vapor form. Perhaps the most overlooked in all of construction is VAPOR! Water that is suspended in air, contacts a cooler surface or air and condensates. Now you have LIQUID moisture where no liquid moisture should be able to access. With no way escape you’ll have rot and potentially molds or mildews in no time. Wood = food for molds. We are still researching and excited to have an entire system in place so what when we start the “building” (to us research and planning is 90% of building so that the construction portion takes 10%) process things will be less stressful and hopefully have less surprises.
