Why did I make a giant cardboard whale, you ask? Long story short, he’s a mock-up of a wearable puppet meant to simulate a whale experience. . I suppose it’s time for a senior thesis update, for those interested! I’m working on designing a natural science exhibit that teaches through sensory experiences. My goal is to help audiences understand the experience of animals, and help build empathy towards the natural world. . I’m focusing primarily on cetaceans (whales, dolphins) because of their complex intelligence, communication, and social structures. Right now I’m building some prototypes to test if puppetry is effective in helping immerse audiences in an exhibit setting. . I believe creating empathy and understanding is a crucial step in inspiring others to be more environmentally sustainable, and preserve these absolutely wonderful creatures. . . .
