Both squat variations are extremely useful in building strength, adding muscle and developing power for athletic activities
.
There are differences in mechanics that make different muscle groups activate slightly differently in each version of the squat. The overall muscle recruitment is very similar though
.
Proper execution is extremely important and sufficient mobility is required for both versions (although the mobility needed for front squats is greater - which is not a bad thing )
.
Whichever version you prefer, it’s a good idea to work both of them in to your overall programming
.

The only other compensation I occasionally see is wrist stiffness either due to decreased wrist extension mobility or due to really tight forearm flexors!

A common compensation with the front squat is not being able to maintain the high elbow position. Of course there are other reasons as to why this may happen besides the reasons I provided above.

The muscles that if tight will inhibit the shoulder to optimally flex while front squatting. The two muscles are the latissimus dorsi which attaches to the humerus and the tricep long head which attaches to the shoulder.

Thoracic extension can also impact mobility of the shoulder. Flexing the shoulder in a upright position such as the front squat, will need t-spine extension to have adequate shoulder flexion to keep those elbows high especially with a bar across your shoulders and upper chest.

Well, this literally came out of nowhere, but after deadlifting the day before, I thought my body would feel like for squats, but then I squatted 550lbsx1 (PR ) @8.5-9ish // If my body was feeling fresh, I probably could have gone slightly heavier but this was the most confident and relaxed I’ve felt for squats // Did a few backoffs with 425lbs for 3s (last rep for pause) // Keeping this momentum going! My worst lift is becoming a mediocre lift now // Repping @jed_north shorts, briefs, and shirt these shorts are perfect for squats for the ones that have kept asking me!

The beginning of a short week for myself, as im off to Ireland on Friday! Some of you probably remember that I started a cut a few weeks back, basically long story short i sacked it off. The reason being 12 weeks was too intense of an approach when cutting for holiday, and if im honest felt i was seing too much progress with my lifts at the time and still am, however dont want to look complete garbage on holiday. So 6 weeks or so is the time ive allowed so lets see what we can do
.
Ive made a few adjustments, reintroducing intermittent fasting (18/6) purely down to working hours, getting up even earlier than i need isnt ideal, so im going to enjoy the extra time in bed and allow myself more food pre/post workout which suits me. Im also reducing my calories to 2300
.
Macro breakdown is as follows - 290g Carbs, 170g Protein, 50g Fat
