Don’t let this delicate looking specimen fool you, being a lead carbonate mineral makes these works of art a scale tipper. Ranging as high as 77.5% lead content, Cerussite is the master of misconception holding heavy weight and ranging only 3 to 3.75 on the Mohs hardness scale. Cerussite received its unique name from the Latin word cerussa, meaning “white lead”. Creussa nativa was mentioned as far back as 1565 by a renowned physician and naturalist named Conrad Gessner. Since then examples from this location can be found in prominent books like “Namibia: Minerals and Localities”(varies volumes), “Icons” and “The Smale collection-Beauty in natural crystals”. Cerussite is famed for forming some of the most interesting, complex, and varied crystals/groupings found in the mineral kingdom. Our piece comes in a highly coveted form of reticulated growths of thin crystals which in best cases form the delicate, snowflake-like mass seen above. This piece sits perfectly symmetrical and balanced on its center matrix causing an almost unrealistic mirroring on both sides with an outstanding level of transparency to match. Boasting the size of a grown mans hand this snowflake demands the attention of any display it sits in. It accounts for two thirds of the worlds emerald production and it is also known for producing the best quality and most vivid colored emeralds. The historic Muzo mine is tucked away deep in the Colombian Andes surrounded by beautifully lush and thick green vegetation. There they carefully and meticulously comb and dig through piles of black earth in hopes to find specks of green hope. While many of the emeralds found are transformed into elegant cut stones, special matrix pieces are kept “as is” preserving their natural beauty. Our piece was found nestled perfectly upright in the center of a small matrix crevice made up of calcite and pyrite. Specimens of gem quality kept intact are often highly appreciated due to the fact that many miners tend to cut the crystals seeking out maximum value in the cut stone world.
