#tbt to one of the greatest uses of a simple property—Harry Colt’s St. Germain to the west of Paris. This is the par 3 5th, which plays over a jumble of heath-y vegetation and a set of (very) short bunkers before reaching a long narrow green with funky mounding at the left and a sharp drop off at the right. This was fairly heavily shaped for its time, and it succeeds both as an interesting golf hole as well as a pleasant landscape scene, much like many other holes on the course. I drove almost 3 hours from college on a last minute call to caddy for, perhaps, the foursome of the decade. So many IG handles in one group, I can’t seem to grasp it. Calusa Pines was rewarded with a significant jump in the @golfdigest ranking from 95th to 83rd (FWIW the jump was predicted by yours truly after playing there last year, but I digress). The par 3s are spectacular, and the 11th is my favorite. Playing 170 yards from the blue tees, slightly down hill to an angled green, any miss is painful. I think the hole would qualify as a Redan - but a verification from anyone out there would be appreciated (@fried_egg_golf @leftymjs ?) Calusa is rumored to be in some financial trouble and therefore much more open to unaccompanied rounds then it used to be, so if you’re going to be in the area - you should definitely inquire. Peering through the trees at Renaissance Club, I feel as if I’m transported to another place. I was already on a different continent, but my eyes see some type of African or Australian landscape. :: This is East Lothian, a council area of Scotland that possess arguably the best golf per centimeter squared over any other region in the world.
