I’m convinced these goats would follow Grant thousands of miles across the country! . So I’ve realized that what we’re doing with our goat herd isn’t as common as I would have expected when we got into it three years ago. Essentially we apply rotational grazing principles we’ve learned about cattle from Joel Salatin, Allan Savory and Greg Judy to feed them only via what they forage. And in certain seasons we do feed hay and fermented hay like @chaffhaye and/or alfalfa pellets if our winter cover crop isn’t ready to graze yet or the fields are particularly wet. . Our herd is a mix of Boar, Kiko and Myotonic genetics, all meat breeds. While we mainly use the goats to clear brush, help develop our silvopasture and generally make way for more grass growth for grazing cattle, we do sell their meat also. . We don’t worm monthly like most goat keepers do (and have only a few times ever in emergencies) and are quick to cull an underperforming breeder. Our goal is to breed for parasite resistance and ability to thrive without grain so that means tough decisions have to be made to cull the ones that don’t do well in our model. We find that when we move them to a fresh paddock every 1-2 days and then rest that land for at least 45 days, parasite problems are limited. . I guess because in America we prefer goat dairy to goat meat, you see a lot more grain-based models. Dairy breeds seem to have evolved to need grain to keep up their milk production. We even tried some Saanen-Oberhaasli crosses for our own dairy needs for a brief period, but needless to say that did NOT work in our model. . In a lot of ways, feeding grain — especially to put weight on the wethers before processing — would be WAY easier. But since goats are blessed with rumens to be able to digest all kinds of plant matter that those of us species with stomachs can’t, it sort of seems like cheating! And there is a beautiful symbiosis that happens with rotationally grazing ruminants in regenerating soil and building biodiversity that doesn’t happen with purchasing grain-based feed grown in monocultures. . If you’re interested in learning more, I can elaborate in another post, or ask away on the comments!

I recently discovered grass fed cow milk! @organicvalley and other than it being super yummy - it’s good for you too! Consuming milk from grass fed cows is a great way to boost your intake of omega-3s (key for brain and heart ❤️ health) as well as CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) a family of polyunsaturated fatty acids that has been shown to exert protective health benefits in areas of inflammation, hypertension, diabetes, and cancer. Have you tried it yet
