Charter airline Hi Fly says they made history when they flew from Portugal to Brazil without any single-use plastic on-board. Aboard the flight (which was the first of four trials), plastic cutlery was replaced with bamboo flatware, and food was served on compostable paper plates. Hi Fly says that they plan on phasing out all single-use plastic by the end of next year — click the link in bio to learn more! #learngreen #livegreen #zerowaste #plasticfree #greennews #greenmatters

️ Alternative campaigns to minimise the environmental and social impact of 'Black Friday' are being championed to steer us all away from excessive spending and its impacts. ⠀ *⠀ How Is Black Friday Being Green?⠀ *⠀ Black Friday, which was adopted across the world from America sees retailers entice frenzied shoppers to “BUY! BUY! BUY!” with big discounts. ⠀ ⠀ This year, campaigners and retailers have introduced alternatives to discourage us from buying stuff we don't need and encourage us to make memories rather than buying them. ⠀ ⠀ @hellohubbub, UK are using #BrightFriday events to raise awareness of textile waste and the value of clothes we already have and Greenpeace are continuing #MAKESMTHNG week by organising workshops to teach reuse, repairing, upcycling and DIY fashion. ⠀ ⠀ REI have created the #OptOutside movement, shutting up shop to encourage time to be spent with nature instead and Patagonia is donating 100% of its Black Friday sales to underfunded environmental organisations. ⠀ *⠀ Why Should We Care? ⠀ *⠀ The UK is predicted to spend £7 billion across Black Friday, mostly online and mostly on electronic and plastic items. ⠀ ⠀ The manufacturing of this stuff, packaging and delivery has a huge impact on emissions, plastic and e-waste. ⠀ ⠀ Whilst some couriers are going greener, diesel vans are a big contributor to emissions and at these peak times, an Amazon truck leaves a fulfilment centre every 93 seconds racking up air pollution. If you’re not in when they deliver it, that’s another trip back!⠀ ⠀ When we hear 70% of us are buying things we NEVER use, this seems avoidable.⠀ *⠀ Be Curious!⠀ *⠀ Write a wishlist before you start browsing- Do you really need it? ⠀ If you’re shopping online, try and order from one place to lessen the emissions from delivery. ⠀ When buying electrical items, use WRAP UK’s SMART method ⠀ And you can always #optoutside after your spree!⠀ ⠀ #oceanplastic #savetheocean #sustainable #zerowaste #saynotoplastic #plasticpollution #savetheplanet #planetearth #saveplanetearth #nopollution #makeachange #noplanetb #ipcc #sustainability #greennews #factoftheday #quotesofinstagram #positive #blackfriday #greenfriday

A new UN report released this week has found that the ozone layer is finally healing. The full recovery from aerosol damage, is likely to fully heal by 2060.⠀ *⠀ Want a weekly digest of environmental news from the past 7 days, in your inbox? Sign up to Curious Earth Weekly; LINK IN BIO ☝️☝️☝️ ⠀ *⠀ What Does This Mean?⠀ *⠀ Ozone (O3) provides our planet with a protective layer (about 30 miles up, above the stratosphere) shielding us from cancer-causing UV radiation. Levels of ozone change naturally due to seasons and sunlight, but man-made aerosol damage tipped the balance.⠀ ⠀ In 1987, the Montreal Protocol was signed by nations of the world. It involved the banning of chemicals known as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in response to the discovery of a hole in the ozone layer over Antartica two years prior, caused by CFCs.⠀ *⠀ Why Should We Care? ⠀ *⠀ This is BIG news. Man-made destruction of the ozone layer was discovered and then acted upon. The evidence shows that the Montreal Protocol is working to repair the ozone layer.⠀ ⠀ The recovery has progressed at a rate between 1 - 3% a decade since 2000. CFCs can take 50 to 100 years to disappear completely, meaning the northern and mid hemisphere should be completely healed by 2030s, and Antarctica by 2060.⠀ ⠀ Next year, there are going to be changes to the Montreal Protocol, called the Kigali amendment. This is intended to reduce future climate change by targeting HFC gases (used in refrigeration) that have a warming effect of over 10,000 times greater than CO2.⠀ ⠀ Follow @curious.earth.hq ⠀ ⠀ #air #uv #ozone #ozonelayer #unenvironment #environment #positivenews #positive #greennews #planetearth #saaveplanetearth #savetheplanet #sustainability #livebetter #zerowaste #nopollution #zeropollution #cfc #co2emissions #noplanetb #savetheocean #earth #montrealprotocol #ipcc

☃️ Investing in a re-usable Christmas tree may seem more sensible than cutting down a real tree every year, but you would have to re-use the fake tree up to 12 times to make up for its carbon footprint.⠀ *⠀ Want a weekly email round-up of the past 7 days of environmental news? Subscribe to Curious Earth Weekly LINK IN BIO @curious.earth.hq ⠀ *⠀ What Does This Mean?⠀ ⠀ According to the British Carbon Trust, if a natural tree ends up as splinters for woodwork or burnt as firewood, it has a 3.5 kg CO2 carbon footprint. But, if a tree ends up decomposing in a waste dump, then its footprint significantly increases to 16 kg.⠀ ⠀ The carbon footprint of an artificial tree (often metal and PVC) is a whole lot bigger, reaching 40 kg of CO2, so it would be more sustainable to re-use it for at least 12 years, compared to a natural one which ends up as splinters.⠀ *⠀ Why Should We Care? ⠀ *⠀ Christmas trees are a big business, with over 80m used around the world each year!⠀ ⠀ The most popular type of Christmas tree in the UK is the Nordman fir. It takes about 10 years for one to grow up to 6ft absorbing CO2 as it grows, helping to keep its footprint down vs plastic. But if you bought an imported tree, such as a a Norwegian Ridgeback Spruce, then its carbon footprint shoots up because of shipping.⠀ *⠀ Be Curious!⠀ *⠀ So... when it comes to buying that tree:⠀ ⠀ 1. Buy local & FSC certified⠀ 2. Buy with roots / potted⠀ 3. Plant in the garden and re-use next year. If you don't have a garden try a neighbour or the local wood!⠀ ⠀ Plenty of cool alternative Christmas trees, our very own @mart_lowd made one out of a spare wooden pallet!⠀ ⠀ Send us your best Christmas tree snaps or tag us @curious.earth.hq⠀ ⠀ #sustainability #sustainabie #christmas #greenchristmas #greenplanet #blueplanet #savetheocean #savetheplanet #savethetrees #environment #curiousearth #curious #greennews #makeachange #noplanetb #ipcc #factoftheday #positive #quotesofinstagram #quiz #planetearth #sustainablechristmas

A sperm whale, measuring 10m long, was found washed up in Wakatobi National Park in Eastern Indonesia with over 6kg of plastic waste inside its stomach.⠀ *⠀ Want a weekly digest of environmental news from the past 7 days, in your inbox? Sign up to Curious Earth Weekly; LINK IN BIO @curious.earth.hq ☝️☝️☝️ ⠀ *⠀ Impact of Ingesting Plastic?⠀ *⠀ It's an over-whale-ming amount of plastic! With 1000+ pieces of plastic waste found inside the carcass; including 115 plastic cups, 25 plastic bags and a pair of flip flops. WWF Indonesia weren’t able to determine the cause of the whale’s death but said “the facts that we see are truly awful”.⠀ ⠀ This isn’t the first time plastic has been found inside marine animals. Each year, 100,000 marine mammals and turtles are killed by plastic bags and if rates of plastic pollution continue there could be more plastic than fish in the oceans by 2050. From the 500 million plastic straws used in the US each day, to the wet wipes we flush down our loos, we are filling the oceans with plastic.⠀ *⠀ Why Should We Care? ⠀ *⠀ Remember in Finding Dory when Dory got stuck in a six pack ring? #Disney were making a powerful point as this is now the inescapable reality for many fish and marine mammals. Last year, scientists found traces of plastics in mackerel and anchovies, which means plastics are already in our food chain (and we really don’t fancy eating flip flops and chips next time we’re at the seaside!)⠀ *⠀ Be Curious!⠀ *⠀ With Black Friday tomorrow, and the Christmas shopping season upon us, you may find yourself doing more online shopping than usual. Try to avoid plastic packaging where you can. Add a note in the ‘comments’ section of your orders requesting businesses leave the plastic packaging and bubble wrap out. ⠀ ⠀ Businesses might not always listen, but the more we ask, the more likely they are to change!⠀ ⠀ #flipflop #whale #dory #findingdory #oceanplastic #savetheocean #sustainable #zerowaste #saynotoplastic #plasticpollution #savethewhales #savetheplanet #planetearth #saveplanetearth #nopollution #makeachange #noplanetb #ipcc #sustainability #greennews #factoftheday #quotesofinstagram #positive
