Took a few close up photos of the Abert's Towhee (Pipilo aberti) nest in our Royal Lee sweet cherry tree. With closer inspection, I can see lots of things we laid out as compost and chop-and-drop in the garden ended up in this nest... spent wildflower stems, coffee filter, lemongrass, winter vegetable pruning and many other carefully selected materials by the bird mama! This also confirms to me that the chop-and-drop method not only provides for in-place composting for the garden, but also provides nice natural materials for native birds to consume and build nests with! Our arugula plant in the Kitchen Garden not only fed us through winter, but also supported an amazing amount of wildlife through its lifecycle. A month ago, when it was in peak bloom, crazy variety and amount of pollinators came to feed on the nectar and collect pollens. As shown in the first two videos. Now it has went to seed, family of house finch comes to pick the seed pods clean. Check out the family of 7 house finches balancing and having a good time snacking on arugula seed pods!
