I still remember seeding my last batch of peas for the season, and being very sad about it. that meant that our growing season was close to coming to an end. Now it is almost time to start seeding peas again, and I couldn’t be happier! This variety of peas is called, Maxigolt from @johnnys_seeds It quickly has taken 1st place on my list of pea varieties. Next to these newly seeded peas, I have my carrots that I just keep pulling as we eat them! When you seed the carrots, I know we are told to thin them once they start growing as plants. The truth is, I don’t thin them until they start producing. We won’t pull them until they are at least a small little carrot. If I pull it, there better be something on it that I can eat! We pull and snack on carrots for months this way! We always make sure that when we pull them, we pull them from an area that’s a bit crowded. I’ve never had a problem with my other carrots around them, to continue growing and producing into full-size carrots. For some of you that are new here, you’ll see that I don’t always follow the ‘rules’ of gardening. I just have fun, and never overthink it ❤️❤️

Meet food foresters Donto & Amy @foodforesters from Webster, FL, USA Why do you have a food forest? It started with health issues we had in our family. We decided to start growing our own herbs and some small plants. We started watching videos on youtube and realized that we could grow our own food forest. Size of site? 2.2 Acres What was there before you started? Grass, weeds and everything was run down and overgrown, including the house. When did you start your food forest and what was the process for getting it established? We started in 2017, since our property floods a lot, we decided to grow in tires, until we can get ditches dug and another retention pond. We started with small plants and some fruit trees. Slowly we began adding more plants and built a greenhouse for the tropical varieties What are your limiting factors for growth? Money, time and the flooding that happens during rain storms. What are you growing? Bananas, pineapples, grapes, loquat, figs, mangos, papaya, cranberry hibiscus, red sorrell, jackfruit, moranga, lemon grass, mint, spearmint, lemon balm, jasmine, sunflowers, strawberry tree, barbados cherry, corn, beans, peas, tomatoes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, sage, organo, rosemary, fennel, onions, basil, ginger, cassava, blueberry, blackberry, mulberry, jabuticaba tree, peppermint, soursop, mint tree, curry leaf, miracle fruit, brown sapote, dragon fruit, passion fruit, and many more. Where did you get your plants? Family & friends, than plant swaps/meets, we look for sales too. Any tips for aspiring food foresters? Look over your land, see where the water flows. Look into native plants and get fruit trees in the ground first. Start small and just do things one step at a time. What’s the best way to connect?
