“Never say never!” This old adage rings true again and again, especially with my sewing. I can remember a year ago as I began to ramp up the intensity of my sewing, I thought, “I could never make jeans. It would be too hard to get the fit right.” So I avoided jeans patterns until @megannielsenpatterns “Dawn” arrived! Finally a jeans pattern that was modern and high-rise, just to my liking. After seeing others’ makes on IG, I wanted to jump in. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ However, I tend to make duplicates of bottoms in my wardrobe, so I wanted to change up the jean style. I was inspired by Madewell’s Demi Boot Jean with a back seam (last photo) because I’ve wanted this demi boot style for a while, but nothing was flattering enough for my shape. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ After some pattern editing, completing a muslin 2 sizes too small , some more pattern editing, and completing the correct-sized muslin, I achieved the perfect fit. And then these stunning jeans were born! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Here’s to “never” becoming “often”! P.S. When starting a new project, I get really excited, so much so it seems as if the finished garment is right there with me. I imagine all the ways I can style it, and it makes me super happy! That’s how I felt at first about this wrap top. Muslin ✅ Fit ✅ Cut just enough fabric with little to spare ✅ But when the sewing started, I noticed the fit was WAY off! The back neckline was gaping, the shoulder gathers were not to my liking, and to top it off the bottom band that I cut was way too short. All of my excitement left my studio in a heartbeat. I was pretty down about it. And this is not a first time occurrence for me. Years of sewing have thought me you’re never too experienced to make a mistake or even fail at a project. Typically in this case I would have either scraped the project or thrown it into the WIP bin never to be touched again. But in this instance I decided to put it away for some time but kept it in sight as not to forget about it. During a two week period I focused on other sewing projects, and my success with these projects motivated me to return to the botched wrap top. Returning, my mind was clearer, and I had new ideas to make it work. And you know what? My changed perspective made all the difference. I love this top! But thanks to Killing Eve binge-watching and having readily available in my purse for on-the-go knitting I finished it in 2 weeks (super fast compared to my usual knitting). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I knit this sweater using their newly launched New Wave Yarn in “Bronzed Olive” colorway. This sweater is super soft and it’s wonderful to know that each skein (I used 7 skeins) is made from cotton as well as 3 recycled plastic bottles. @sewingblue top 5 tips for a nice top stitching: 1. Adjust your needle positioning for the right distance instead if using your pressar foot as a guideline (swipe my needle in a right side position ). This works for top stitching 5-10 mm from seam. 2. Always press the seam to the side before top stitching (press it flat first and then open and then to the side).Press the finished top stitch 3. Hand feed over the thick fabric parts very slowly (over double seams for example) 4. Use long stitches appr 3 mm 5. If you use thicker thread for the top stitch, continue using regular thread in the Bobbin. This is to prevent thread problems. 6. (bonus!) Breath in a calm rhythm. 7. (bonus no2).
