One of the newest additions to my collection, and a rarer trilobite to acquire in good quality. Trilobites of the order Harpetida have a large genal border, most likely used to make them stay afloat on top of the silt or soft sediments of the ocean bed. Their upward facing and minuscule eyes are not essential to their survival as some trilobites of the same region do (Erbenochile, Symphysops etc), further showing these trilobites were mainly bottom-dwelling feeders. Harpids of Morocco are not well studied, but the most common Harpids from the Devonian layers are Aristoharpes and Harpes. But recently, a few specimens like this one have been coming from a new locality as an uncertain genus, in which have been termed (cf.) Lioharpes sp. Lioharpes is a genus found from mainly Europe, so an example with similar traits such as this from Morocco is quite exciting. This Harpid variety is different from other genus mainly through the blunt-ending genal spines and a broader crescent-shaped genal border. UC Davis researchers have demonstrated the use of new techniques in X-ray spectroscopy to illuminate the internal structure of manganese-doped gallium arsenide—a promising material for spintronics. Spintronics holds promise for new types of devices for information processing and data storage, with ones and zeros being stored in the spin state of electrons as well as their electric charge. Such devices could be faster and more energy efficient than current electronics. This is the first time it has been possible to get this kind of information on structural and electronic properties from materials, and the technique should be applicable to any kind of material, including metals, semiconductors, insulators, and superconductors.
