Franz Kline (May 23, 1910 – May 13, 1962) was an American painter. He is associated with the Abstract Expressionist movement of the 1940s and 1950s. Kline, along with other action painters like Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell, and Lee Krasner as well as local poets, dancers, and musicians came to be known as the informal group, the New York School. Although he explored the same innovations to painting as the other artists in this group, Kline's work is distinct in itself and has been revered since the 1950s.

#HelenFrankenthaler
Helen Frankenthaler (1928–2011) has long been recognized as one of the great American artists of the twentieth century. Heir of first-generation Abstract Expressionism, she brought together in her work a conception of the canvas as both a formalized field and an arena for gestural drawing. The artist’s work is included at the current exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art titled Spilling Over: Painting in the 1960s. This show gathers paintings from the 1960s and early 1970s that inventively use bold, saturated, and even hallucinatory colour to activate perception. Frankenthaler is pictured above sitting in her studio surrounded by her paintings for Life Magazine in 1956.
