What other backpacking food is so calorie-dense, that is, contains so many calories for every ounce? Not many. Olive oil is ALL calories. Cheddar cheese, by comparison, can contain up to 39% water. That’s a lot of extra weight with no nutritional benefit. ⁣ ⁣ Use it like you’d use butter. I always add it tuna fish, but it will go in just about anything. Or drink it right out of the bottle. It won’t hurt you. I’ve never had stomach issues either (although you might want to experiment with it yourself before you hit the trail.)⁣ ⁣ Olive oil is especially good for long trails. A current Appalachian Trail thru-hiker, Frozen at @frozensoutdooradventures, was losing a lot of weight by the time he entered Virginia earlier this month. He added olive oil to his resupply. In his most recent YouTube video (he’s making some good ones), he says his energy has returned thanks to the olive oil. ⁣ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Besides being a good source of calories, you can also use olive oil as a skin moisturizer, as shaving cream, as a lubricant for zippers, plus a bunch of other things I read on the Internet but don’t really believe, e.g., insect repellant, sunburn treatment, dish soap, and a cure for snoring.⁣ ⁣ How do you store olive oil in your backpack? I’m always worried about leaks and spills, so I just buy a medium-sized bottle and keep it outside my pack like a water bottle. It works! And olive oil really doesn’t taste that bad either ...
