⠀ Today is the first of December, meaning it's day one of our #AshmoleanAdvent Calendar!⠀ ⠀ On each of the days leading up to Christmas, we'll be sharing a fascinating and festive object from our collections for you to 'open up' and discover. A new object will be revealed here every morning. ⠀ ⠀ Day 1⠀ Yūhi Hill and Drum Bridge at Meguro by Utagawa Hiroshige⠀ ⠀ Our first advent calendar treat is this woodblock print of a snowy bridge by Japanese master print maker Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858). Here, Hiroshige has skilfully depicted the chilly silence of a snowy afternoon. The snow and snowflakes in the image are depicted by leaving unprinted spots on the paper that stand out against the dark blues of the river and sky; a technique used in traditional Chinese and Japanese ink painting.⠀ ⠀ Check back tomorrow to find out what is behind our second advent calendar window.⠀ ⠀ #AshmoleanMuseum #Ashmolean #Museum #Art #Culture #MaterialCulture #History #InstaHistory #InstaMuseum #Japan #Edo #Hiroshige #Landscape #JapaneseArt #Advent #AdventCalendar #Christmas #Snow #Oxford #Woodblock #Woodcut

If I had to chose only one Japanese woodblock print as my favorite, I'd probably chose this print by Hiroshi Yoshida. It's such a soothing piece of art. I imagine that it's early morning (the title kinda gives it away) and the sun has just gone up over the sails, giving them a nice color gradient. I just want to swim in that beautiful water. ———————————————— Hiroshi Yoshida, Japan (1876-1950) Sailing Boats in the Morning - Inland Sea (1912-26) #HiroshiYoshida #hiroshige #葛飾北斎 #Hokusai #manga #ukiyoe #painting #paintings#oilpainting#oilpaintings #instaart #art#artoftheday#artofinstagram #dailyart#arte #kunst#artist #artwork#吉田 博#portrait#arthistory#arthistorynerd #paint#artdaily#artoninstagram #instagramart#artagram#igart
