Doddington Hall (@doddingtonhall), in #Lincolnshire, is a much-loved family home, built between 1593 and 1600 by Robert Smythson for Thomas Tailor, who was a lawyer, the Recorder to the Bishop of Lincoln. Doddington is architecturally important for two reasons: First, it is a very good example of Robert Smythson’s (1534–1613) work. He is generally accepted as #England’s first real #architect. He worked originally as a stone mason on #Longleat with his three most important houses as architect being Hardwick Hall, Burton Agnes and Wollaton. A number of his houses were lost in the civil war. Second, Doddington is completely unchanged on the outside. The interior is mainly a sympathetic refit in 1763, but the house has never been sold so there are contents from every generation. Visitors are able to explore not only the Hall and Gardens but also the Bike Shop, Café, Restaurant, Coffee Shop, Home Store, Farrow & Ball and Country Clothing Store. #Doddington Hall is free to visit for members of Historic Houses. I’d rob a bank to afford this home, no joke

Deene Park (@deenepark) has been the home of the Brudenell family for 500 years since 1514 and was the seat of the 7th Earl of Cardigan who led the Charge of the Light Brigade in 1854. The house has grown in size as generations have made their own mark through the years, providing the visitor with an interesting yet complementary mixture of styles. There is a considerable collection of family portraits and possessions, including uniforms and memorabilia from the Crimean War. The largely #Tudor house with important #Georgian additions is surrounded by historic gardens set in #beautiful parkland views. They comprise a David Hicks parterre with topiary teapots, long mixed borders, ‘four seasons’ garden with a spectacular planted font and circular hornbeam hedge, stone summerhouse, lakes and wild gardens. Glamis Castle (@glamiscastlescotland) is situated beside the village of Glamis in #Angus, #Scotland. It is the home of the Earl and Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne, and is open to the public. Glamis Castle has been the home of the Lyon family since the 14th century, though the present building dates largely from the 17th century. Glamis was the childhood home of #QueenElizabeth The Queen Mother, wife of King George VI. Their second daughter, Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, was born there. The most #famous #legend connected with the castle is that of the Monster of Glamis, a hideously deformed child born to the family. Some accounts came from singer and composer Virginia Gabriel who stayed at the castle in 1870. In the story, the #monster was kept in the castle all his life and his suite of rooms bricked up after his death. There is an old story that guests staying at Glamis once hung towels from the windows of every room in a bid to find the bricked-up suite of the monster. When they looked at it from outside, several windows were apparently towel-less. #Glamis Castle is free to visit for members of Historic Houses.
