Saint George was born in the Cappadocia region of Turkey in the third century. Saint George was a Christian soldier in the Roman army who eventually became a bodyguard to the Emperor Diocletian. Diocletian led a sustained campaign of persecution against Christians in the empire. Saint George protested and was imprisoned, tortured and beheaded in Palestine in 303 AD. So where does the dragon come into the story? Legend has it that a dragon terrorized the people of Silene, Libya, poisoning the local countryside with its venom. The people tried to appease the dragon by offering sacrifices of sheep, then men and sheep, and finally children chosen by lottery. One day, the local king’s daughter was chosen as ...um...tribute and sent to the dragon’s lair. Saint George happened to be in the area and drove his lance into the dragon. The princess then tied her belt around the dragon’s neck and led the now docile beast by a leash back towards the town. The townspeople were terrified and Saint George, seeing an opportunity, promised to kill the dragon if they all converted to Christianity. He did and fifteen thousand men and the King converted. So what is the connection to Georgia? Saint Nino, the first Christian missionary to Georgia who converted Georgia’s royal family, was Saint George’s cousin. She too is a national hero. Georgians celebrate Saint George’s Day each November 23rd. Fun fact: if you meet a woman in Georgia, there is a good chance that her name is Nino! We met many Ninos on our trip and they were all lovely!

In 1989, the Georgian Orthodox Patriarchate and Tbilisi city officials first announced a plan to build a new Georgian Orthodox cathedral. The cathedral was intended as a monument to commemorate 2000 years since the birth of Christ and 1500 years since the founding of the Georgian Orthodox Church. Over 80% of the country’s population identifies as Georgian Orthodox. The Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi was constructed between 1995 and 2004 and is one of the largest religious buildings in the world by total area. It is a beautiful building and makes me glad that, in a seemingly temporary and disposable world, we sometimes still invest in beautiful structures that will stand through the ages.

This is the Holy Trinity Church (Formerly Scottish Episcopal Church) with too much backlight obviously ‍♀️. Holy Trinity is prominently sited at the NW side of the Dean Bridge overlooking Dean Village. The church retains its original form and detailing despite later conversion to an electricity transformer station.  It was built by John Henderson 1837-8 and converted to an electricity substation in 1957.  Today it is back to its roots and serves as Rhema Christian Centre Church.
