'Bohemian Rhapsody' (2018). Well, what do you know? I wasn't expecting to like this at all but it totally won me over with its easy charm. It's a tough gig adapting a life story when most of the main characters are still alive; tougher still when several of them are physically (and financially) involved in the production and keen to ensure they come out looking, well, at least halfway good. . . After an almost legendarily troubled production - a zillion different scripts and the abrupt departures of the original lead actor and also subsequently the director - it's frankly a miracle that it's as good as it is. The loss of Sacha Baron Cohen was almost certainly a blessing in disguise. His Freddie Mercury would have veered far too close to caricature. Rami Malek lacks the real Freddie's more imposing stature - there's a reminder in the live clip that plays over the end titles - but though significantly more delicate physically he really does lose himself in the spirit of the man. Best actor? Well I don't know about that, but he does a truly excellent job of illustrating the many paradoxes of such a complicated and conflicted personality, making him a sympathetic and likeable figure; more so perhaps than even the real Freddie was. . . It's impossible to know how much of the film was shot by original director Bryan Singer, who was ousted mid-production, and how much by his stand-in Dexter Fletcher, but there is no discernible incongruity in any of the scenes. That bodes well for Fletcher's companion piece 'Rocket Man' - about Elton John of course - out later this year. In fact, the direction adds necessary style and heft to what is inevitably a slightly cartoonish script, which has to cram 15 years of detail into the space of a couple of hours, hitting all its marks in more or less the right places.

Purchased the green release in ‘95 and it was autographed by “Johnny” (Russell Streiner) a few years ago.
