It has been 6 months since I became initiated into Candomblé, the African spiritual tradition as it is expressed and practiced in Brazil. We must tune into the powerful wisdom of our ancestors, who lived in harmony with the natural world. Some people go weeks, months, and even years without putting their bare feet into the earth, connecting to the seas and rivers, or submerging into the forests. Contemporary Western Science is just beginning to understand the power of our traditions in elevating our health. @indigenouspeoplesmovement @breakfastclubam

Thanksgiving is a holiday that celebrates the historic slaughter of Indigenous peoples. ⁣ ⁣ The tale told of the pilgrims sharing a meal with the “Indians” is one that is rife with falsehoods, intentional mistruths, and bold-faced lies that cast the charm of a heartwarming, albeit completely bullshit, history. ⁣ ⁣ This harmful narrative has been written into the fabric of #American society and promotes a whitewashed version of historical events. #Thanksgiving gives nod to colonizer and capitalism alike after riding in on the back of a wave of deeply problematic #holidays in so-called America. Halloween, Columbus Day, and Thanksgiving all attest to the U.S.’s commitment to continued erasure of the genocide that took place across the nation. ⁣ ⁣ We encourage everyone to engage in critical conversations about #IndigenousPeoples, the land, and the truth of what’s really being celebrated tomorrow.⁣ ⁣ #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth

In many indigenous communities, #IndigenousLanguages not only identify their origin or membership in a community, they also carry the ethical values of their ancestors. The lack of dialogue between elders and the youth is exacting a toll, not just in terms of language but in ancestral ethical principles. This photo is well known and used on many websites when describing Sámi people. The photo is said to be taken in Tromsø, but the photographer's name or the year is missing. My guess is 1880's, and photographer could be Wickstrøm, Wennberg or C. Hansen. From my sources i have following info about the persons, and I hope we're close. Please comment if you know more:  The woman with pipe was Maria Valkeapää (Rija Marja). She was married to Anders Olsson Blind (Ovvla Ándaras). In the summer they lived at Kvaløya by Tromsø. At winters they lived on the Swedish side of the border, most likely towards Karesuando. It has been suggested that the two other women may be family members, and names as Marianne (Rija Anne) and Berit Karen Valkeapää has been suggested. #valkeapää #karesuando #tromsø #sapmi #sápmi #samisk #1880s #colorizedphoto #coloredphoto #colourised #colourisedphoto #smokingpipe #arcticpeople #indigenouspeoples #indigenous #natives #native #karesuvanto #gárasavvon #romsa #colourmypast #colouryourpast #naturals #naturalgirls

#ColumbusDay or #IndigenousPeoplesDay? At least 55 cities and 4 states - #Minnesota #Vermont #Alaska and #SouthDakota - have chosen to celebrate the latter, arguing that #ChristopherColumbus did not “discover” the land we know as the United States today but #colonized it. . Our US-CT:Mohegan field school brings together students and staff to learn about colonial history, the history of North American archaeology, and—most importantly—the often-troubled relationship between archaeologists and indigenous communities. The field school runs as an equal partnership between the Tribe and archaeologists.

#NathanPhillips, a proud Veteran of Indigenous descent, experienced the utmost racism and inhumane encounter with Trump supporting teenagers. This is so beyond disgusting. My blood boils every time I watch these posts. | What do you think about this? What should the consequence be?
