The inner thighs do more than add aesthetic to the upper leg (or lack thereof, if you’re into thigh gap♀️) They are literally connected to the pelvic floor, as well as to the abdominal muscles, via the fascial slings of the body⛓
. . .
This means that a dysfunction in one of these areas will inadvertently affect the others. This often leads to discrepancies in activation (increased tension vs decreased tension), thereby resulting in decreased function and compensations
. . .
An example of this may be improper sequencing between the pelvic floor, diaphragm and deep core muscles — which is often seen in cases of diastasis recti, stress incontinence, post (abdominal) surgery, and even weight lifting️♂️
. . .
The body will inevitably sense that it needs stability, and will look elsewhere to get it. This is usually above and/or below the area that is dysfunctional. In our example of a non-functional core, the inner thighs may kick in to supply that stability; however, this may result in increased tension that can in turn cause other problems both up and down the line↕️
. . .
Solution: see a licensed professional for a screening! Address the core issue (pun intended) and release structures that may secondarily be hindering other areas from doing their job. In this case, the inner thigh
. . .
Here, eccentrically loading the inner thigh complex in order to regain length/decrease tension, strengthen and facilitate proper firing. Unilateral loading also forces the abdominal muscles to work more in order to maintain stability and balance. Win win!

Focal points:
Begin in a half-kneeling position, one leg externally-rotated and extended out to side — hips should remain square forward. Supporting knee directly underneath hip. Tuck pelvis slightly into a posterior tilt to engage glutes.
Flex foot of extended leg and press heel down and into floor
Hinge hips slowly back, keeping tension down into floor
